Edit: 5/29:
Okay, because no one else has taken up the offer, and the well has dried up (unless the set is rereleased), I'm closing this down. I've not found any sets for weeks, and I hate the thought of someone coming for help under a false hope.
I'm happy to offer my address as a go between if someone needs, though. _________________________________ I am willing to help as many people as I can get this for the US price. However, at $100 a pop, I can only afford to do one at a time, IF I ever find them at all (which I can't even guarentee). For whoever wants them, please "Sign up" here, and I will do my best to fulfill orders in the order you ask. First come, first serve. I'm not asking for payment up front, but I'll need it as quickly as possible too
Unless Nick wants/needs them for Toyfu, in which I'll try to serve charity alongside everyone else.
My TRU is awful, and I can't even guarentee one for myself, let alone anyone else.

Is there a rough estimate at how much postage is going to cost?
I'd probably want to throw my hat in for one but trying to weigh it up between paying a little bit more here and saving your good self the hassle of trying to track them down then having to pack them and send them.

I snagged phil's today and will be shipping it as a one off very soon, so I'll let you guys know the basic cost, though individually it may vary depending on the sizes of the boxes I find. I'm also happy to open it and ditch the packaging, which will make it way cheaper. (It comes with a nice cardboard poster of the boxart)

Nice. That needs CUTA avoidance tactics employed as the postage will be a fair bit for a big box, but perhaps not enough to put it over the £120-130 we're being charged for UW boxed sets from import shops here.

Also, that does beg the question why ID Toys thought £180 was even remotely sensible. I notice the preorder for that went to sold out straight after the American retail price was revealed. I wondered if that meant they'd actually pulled it realising they're asking almost twice the actual cost.
I realise they'll only be adding their own margin to whatever it's costing them, but maybe the realised the route they were going doesn't make sense.

I'm game for avoidance tactics, but don't know what they are. I had a chinese guy want me to fudge the value so it wouldn't get flagged by theirs. I can also ship UPS, or fedex if that helps. But they generally cost more than mail.

To avoid CUTA you have to mark it as being worth under £15 or whatever the limit is, though clearly big packages marked that low would be seen (quite rightly) as suspicious and probably opened, checked and fined on top of it!

Does marking it as a gift still circumvent CUTA? Stick a 50p birthday card in with it?

Every time we work all that out I forget it all again a week later. I've got a feeling the gift option doesn't work the way it used to. The value (wot used to be £36?) isn't anywhere near that now.

CUTA has just rodgered me for something I bought from the US. Actual value of the item was about £17, postage cost £42 and customs sent a ransom note for another £20.

It is a very stupid system when the value is on the border like that.

The value (wot used to be £36?) isn't anywhere near that now. www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-dutyIf the VAT is paid depends on the value of the item, but the VAT (20%) is calculated on Value of item + Postage. So getting Jetty to tick the gift box and mark it at $40 should do the trick.

Soooo... if you valued that box at $50 you *might* just get away with it as a gift...
But that has implications for insurance too - if it goes missing and you've valued it at $50, you wouldn't get $100 back.

$40
$50 at 1.22 (yes that bad) is £40. and you know they would

Indeed, that's why I said might. Xe.com said 1.24. It is a miserable rate. $40 sounds risky to me. What if it went missing?

So $100 would be £80.
20% of that would be £16 in custom charge.
Plus 20% of the postage ?
Plus the clearance fee (£12)

FYI to everyone:
The packaging isn't as nice or sturdy as the CW sets. The toys are in a thin plastic blister like any toy now a days, but the plastic is a bit flimsier, but there's no cardboard holding it like in normal boxed toys.
It comes with a large poster of the package art that's made of card stock.
This does mean that it's quite a bit lighter that the CW sets, so ditching the packaging wouldn't save much in weight, and the card poster doesn't even save much in space.
On the flip side, the packaging, being flimsier, isn't as nice as the CW sets and I imagine you guys might question saving it when you get it.
Point is if you're on the fence, I don't think me ditching the packaging is gonna help with the shipping *that* much.
Not nearly as much as bulk shipping multiple sets would, at least.

With the Toyfu stuff and the group buys I came to the decision it really wasnt worth messing around with trying to avoid customs by undervaluing the package.
But if the delivery is only for one item and its not that much more than £39 then it might be worth the risk.

As someone who sells import toys and knowing the wholesale cost of this item, £180 is fair for that cost. Might not be fair compared to the US retail, but no-one knew that price when orders were due in. I know I'm going to struggle to sell the sets at a high price, so I might try breaking one up and selling the pieces separately. To avoid CUTA you have to mark it as being worth under £15 or whatever the limit is, though clearly big packages marked that low would be seen (quite rightly) as suspicious and probably opened, checked and fined on top of it! Also has to be from a private address to a private address for the gift value to apply, no sending a box to work! And you won't get fined, if they don't believe the stated value you will have to provide proof of the value, usually a receipt of payment. Can't prove it, don't get your item, and I would expect they'd flag your address for future packages.

I know I'm going to struggle to sell the sets at a high price, so I might try breaking one up and selling the pieces separately. To be honest, if the US retail price is £85 and it's £53 to send it, then the CUTA is £27.60 and the collection fee at least £8, so that comes to £173 anyway. There's not really much of a saving going on.
