That is an impressive run. You've got to hand it to Commando, it is a real survivor.
I don't pick it up that often these days but, along with its cousin Starblazer, it was a major fixture of my childhood.

Ferg Handley's stories are usually fairly reliable as good reads.

Having enjoyed Lofty's Luftwaffe in the Meg I started wondering about other war stories and intended to pick up a Commando or two today. I was surprised to find one of the issues currently on sale is actually about the Peninsular War as opposed to being 20th Century. Bought that straight away! Since reading Sharpe I've had a real interest in the Napoleonic era. I'm looking forward to a read.
I'll have to keep an eye on that. I'd no idea Commando did other eras.

They do some light science fiction occasionally as well. Usually some form of time travel.

Didn't there used to be a sci-fi comic in Commando format?

Starblazer was excellent. It became more fantasy orientated as it's run went on but lots of memorable characters and great art.

Yes, they do tend to have a fair bit of variety. They also maintain the fortnightly schedule of 4 books published at a time (2 reprints, 2 of new material). I still pick up the odd issue from to time. -Ralph

Starblazer was excellent. It became more fantasy orientated as it's run went on but lots of memorable characters and great art. Starblazer was the reason i didn't get as much Commando in the late 70s and Early Eighties as I might have done. It was always on sale next to Commando, and given the choice between Space Adventure and a war story I gravitated more often than not to the Space Adventure. It is sad that it hasn't survived. I miss seeing exciting Space Opera, Planetary Romance and the like stories on the shelves.

It would be nice if there was some reprints of Starblazer - some quality art in there - I believe Geoff Senior did one, Mick McMahon and more than a few were written by Grant Morrison.

Not heard of Commando! One of the most well known comics from any country!
I...despair. Get thee to a WH Smiths and buy one!

I saw this in Smiths last week. It took me by surprise because it was so big. £15 seems a bit steep for what is effectively two issues of Commando coloured and printed oversized on thicker paper. It's funny seeing this advertised as Commando's first graphic novel.
"What are the youngun's doing with their old strips these days?" "Apparently they bung em in big books and sell them as novels!" "Novels? but we make comics!"
30 years passes...
"Those novels, do you think we ought to have a go at that idea?"

Standard trade paperback price and it has had new colouring and reprographics work done for it. Annoyingly the useless Burger WH Smiths doesn't have it.

Not standard compared to the equivalent books from Marvel and Hachette on the same shelves. Colouring two strips may have cost a bit, although John-Paul Bove would argue otherwise, but they've put a book on the news stand that is £5 more than the ones it's next to and priced it like the Treasury volumes Rebellion are doing without the paper/finish quality.

Partworks are a completely different market though it is good they are teaching readers to expect more bang for their buck.

Found a copy in a Smiths. Suffers from the usual problem most recoloured strips from B&W have: that horrible dark muddy brown over everything!!! Hard to see what was going on in some panels so I left it on the shelf. -Ralph

Commando unusually sold out around here today. Managed to get the Viking Phantom but must look elsewhere for the space one.
