Going back to Marvel days - should they be linked?
The Quintessions are organic with metal implants - but did they have 5 faces when organic? They had troops who could transformer but they can't

No, it's a horrible idea, glad it seems to have vanished, worried it is making a comeback!

No... no no no. The Quintessons make for an interesting enemy when used right (Space Pirates, heck, maybe even Big Broadcast and The Quintesson Journal) but most of the rest of the time they've been poor.

As an origin no. As interesting third party maybe. Space Pirates was a good use of them.
Post-G2 they always struck me more as just another of the many races/worlds of the Cybertronian empire.

The answer should be depends.
It depends on the idea and how it is execute. Making the Autobots consumer devices and the Decepticons military hardware is a daft idea, but having the Transformer race have different origins than the Primus/Unicron story is not necessarily a bad idea.

What would be the origin of the Quintessions themselves & would Alpha Q in Energon be different? We've seen hints of them in IDW. But not a full on story - the most we got was Megatron dragging one around. How did the judgement come about, wre the techno parts to keep them alive?

As an origin, never. And you don't need the quintessons if you want to segregate the TFs from Primus/Unicron. If these two things are your only default choices as a writer, then you're not a good writer.
As a third party, I don't mind them in small doses. I don't even mind them having enslaved the transformers in the past. But no, they should not be an origin. We've already had that.

Nobody said these were the only origin ideas.
And to be honest ruling out concepts/ideas simply because they have been done before is incredibly limited.
If it's a good idea and well told then I would welcome it.

I quite liked the version of the Quintesson origin that James Roberts used back in Eugenesis - I thought it was quite a fun way to have the cake and eat it too - allowing one to keep the broad strokes of the Marvel comic version of the origin along with elements of the Sunbow cartoon origin. It also had the advantage of being told by an unreliable narrator - so the reader could choose how much of it to believe or not believe at their discretion.
I wouldn't rule out of hand the idea of a something called "Quintessons" being tied up in the origin of the Transformers in any new version. It depends on how the elements are used - if they are used in a fairly boring fashion, as Unicron tends to be, then I wouldn't enjoy it, but likewise if they were used in an interesting way and it lead to an interesting story then I don't see the problem.
After all, if I don't like one particular version of the origin of the Transformers there are always plenty more to chose from. Just like the fact that I wasn't particularly taken by most elements of the Sunbow or Armada Cartoons doesn't really stop me enjoying Beast Machines or the Marvel Comic.
Karl
(Of course, for the record - as every believer in the True Faith of Reductionism knows, the Quintessons are involved in the origins of the Transformers. It says so right there in the Book of Eugenesis).

If you'd asked me this last year I'd have been very negative about the Quintessons, being a Marvel true believer when it comes to the origin story.
But then I've spent several months now writing about them for Sunbow Sundays and I've quite come round to the idea of the Transformers being products that became self aware. Ok, so the cartoon itself may not have handled that brilliantly, but look at Westworld and Humans - superb series that use the same idea. I think Flint Dille was on to something with that.

Where did the name Quintesson come from - is it mainly from five? Also anyone had the idea that the Quints could come after Transformers, maybe they are from the future after Beast machines then go back to create normal Transformers (if you think origin should be linked) but making a paradox.

Is the humanoid Quint a image Jim found in his searching? I'll check the page & also ask Jim himself. Looks like a wizard & if a reason for the blobs instead.

It's Chris McFeely who posted up the human Quint - but Jim S mostly spends his time getting behind the scene stuff - he must have got planet layouts.

Wait, he made them? He didn't make the Dinobots. I seem to recall them being lumped in with the rest of "the Primitives", in that episode - with the implication being that they were made by it... At least as far as _Season 3's_ continuity has it, even if not in the continuity of other seasons. Karl
