It was probably at this point they found out the US title was ending (they'd reprinted 21 of its 24 issues) so maybe if the UK sales were dropping too, they decided to spin out what would be two-part eleven-page stories into a month's worth of comic for the same cost.
Interestingly, on this re-read I discovered that UK issues 58 and 59 contain a US story that wasn't printed in the Star comics run. "Dream Master" is another cartoon adaptation written by Gerry Conway, but there's no US issue with that story in. Like we recently discovered there were more 'reserve' Transformers cartoon adaptations waiting in the wings for emergencies than just Big Broadcast, it seems Thundercats had one too that the UK comic needed to use to spin things out.

Interesting. It's been, er, 30 years since I had these comics so much of my memories of it are now rather vague.

I don't remember much either. I'm doing this as a nostalgia exercise more than anything. It's not a great comic. It suffers for not having an ongoing narrative like Transformers and the stories are very simple. Power Pack is much better! I don't really know why I was still buying it at this point. I bailed at 85, which I think is the last issue before the next format change.

I have a similar pining for Thundercats toys, and I bought a Mumm-Ra to dip my toe in the ocean. I've come to the conclusion with those that the villains actually look okay in their original 80s toy form, they're quirky and unique, but the Thundercats themselves really aren't very good. This week coming is 30 years since Thundercats issue 60, the format relaunch issue when the strip dropped to six pages and they brought the text stories in. I think I stuck around for the first few issues of the relaunch and then bailed. Andy

Power Pack was indeed the highlight of the Thundercats comic - aside from the brief period of Galaxy Rangers material.

I reckon I binned Thundercats to buy the new stuff like Dragons' Claws. We're only a month away from 30 years of that.

Yep. June 1988. Be interesting to find the actual onsale date so we can celebrate it properly. It's probably mentioned in the Transformers' editorial.
Noticeable because Geoff Senior has disappeared from the 30 years of Transformers thread at this point.

I can't cope with Dragon's Claws being 30 years old. It's the hot new comic!

TF #166 says Action Force Monthly was to go on sale May 19th, and TF #167 says Dragons' Claws #1 (still calling it Dragons' Teeth) is already out. So I guess Claws #1 went on sale around May 19th with a June cover date.

Thundercats of 30 years ago promotes Dragon's 'Teeth' #1 as being on sale 26th May. So we're not quite there, but do have a day on which to celebrate.

Finally got one of my 80s holy grails. A Dino Riders boxed and working Diplodocus with majority of the accessories and most importantly 2 complete carrier pods. Wasn't cheap but I've always wanted that and the T-Rex since I was a kid. And 30 years after seeing the advert on a VHS and pining for one, I have a working Dino Riders T-Rex!!! Very expensive but worth it.

They rarely come up anywhere in good condition. They almost never come up as working with most of the accessories. I happened to be eBay surfing at 1am this morning and one had come up on BIN so jumped at it.
I can finally recreate that scene in the advert where the diplodocus and T Rex slowly limp towards each other and knock over a model tree.

Dino Riders. It was accompanied by a short lived cartoon voiced by all the regulars of the 80s including Peter Cullen, Frank Welker and Dan Gilvezan. 2 rival factions are fighting it out in space and get sucked through a time portal landing on prehistoric earth. The intro to the cartoon was amazing and the VHS of the cartoon had adverts for the toys, and Nigel Mansell Scalextric strangely enough.
Dinosaurs fitted with guns! The Rulons (bad guys) dinosaurs came with controlling brain boxes and capture devices, the Valorians didn't. Almost every toy had a gimmick as well as the guns, seats and accessories. The smaller ones had a button to press to move their legs and flap their wings, the medium ones on all 4 legs had moving tails and heads, the large and extra large ones had battery operated walking motions and pop open armour. It wasn't distributed very well, Jolly Giant was the only toy shop I remember having them and it was only the smaller ones I ever had, so they're pretty hard to get a hold of. Even rarer to get in good condition with the seats intact and the big ones are like rocking horse droppings, you almost never see them. I've wanted the Torosaurus, Triceratops, Diplodocus and T Rex since the first time I saw the advert. The Triceratops isn't in that picture, I only finally managed to get one last night, but the other 3 I've desperately wanted for 30 years are there. I couldn't find the box with the Diplodocus accessories so he's a bit bare but I'm astounded at how complete the Torosaurus and T Rex are.
I love toy collecting!

This week's 40 year old Eagle brings news of an exciting new venture into space for Hornby in the Shopwatch section. 3DS Mission 1. Never heard of this, but it seems to be a way to make a train set run up the wall.
Also with laser tag type playability.
