My favourite screen adaptation of Arthurian Legend remains the 1998 TV movie 'Merlin' with Sam Neill, Rutger Hauer, Miranda Richardson, Helena Bonham-Carter and Martin Short. Very, very different in tone and emphasis.

Nonsense, it's right up there with other Hallmark productions that I have a soft spot for like Arabian Nights, Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland and Patrick Stewart's A Christmas Carol. They have a Labyrinth-esque innocence and imaginative quality that appeals to me.
Excalibur is too bleak.

The only Hallmark production I've encountered of any merit is the one they did of Frankenstein. Although it's fairly dull it sticks to the original story more closely than all the cinema films.
Also, the monster is played by Luke Goss of Bros fame, which always makes me chuckle.

All Hallmark productions were awful Nonsense, the ones I mentioned are films all right-thinking people should appreciate... like Bill & Ted and Star Fleet.  Some were rubbish, however, such as Snow White, Cleopatra and the Merlin sequel. Felt like they'd been made by people who didn't get what was special about the good ones and so just churned out bland beginning-middle-end narratives devoid of all charm. At their best... well, there are bits of Gulliver's Travels that bring tears to my eyes (and not of laughter). But they are not for cynics or people in a hurry. Haven't seen Frankenstein. Martin |
