Well, I think 'Minerva' is a region in the Balkans, or an island somewhere... perhaps an alcoholic beverage to be served in the Sun...
But, yeah, I TOTALLY see what you mean about the yellow/roof lights thing that you said!

If you could repaint Hosehead, how would you do it (you are not allowed to say "blue like Hot Spot " I'd change the ladder to a crane arm and Grapple him. Not sure he'd work as a yellow airport fire engine Else, given the lack of Hotspot, possibly Artfire it? The options are limited. "Grapple him". Yeah. Uhh. Yeah. Can I get a Grap- Grap- Grap-. Can I get a Grap-Grap-Grap-. Yeah. (Sorry, went a bit 'Lego Batman' there....)

Shockprowl Have you never seen them before? There's lots more of the same in Japan in 1988. Minerva is the first female TF toy. She is also ££££.

I thought it was always obvious that Minerva was first and Nightbeat was the repaint because of the lights/hinge. I've always wondered why they didn't keep them as lights on Nightbeats car mode so he was some sort of undercover police car - sort of like something, I don't know, a detective would drive...

I thought it was always obvious that Minerva was first and Nightbeat was the repaint because of the lights/hinge. What's obvious to some is barking mad lunacy to others. I'm sure Burns will be along at some pt to explain why we are wrong. The Masterforce Transition leaflet doesn't have many toys in their Japanese colours but it does have these....... And Six Knight and Ginrai? Are those then the originals with Quickswitch as a western repaint, a rather gaudy one at that, and Powermaster Optimus as a cut down version rather than an enhancement? The next year you can make a very good case that the Dinocons are the originals and not the Pretender Monsters too..... Hasbro Pretender Monsters Monstructor Takara Dinoforce Dinoking

The insides of the Pretender Monster guys don't look very dinosaury though That's true - they are more monster than dinosaur. But then a lot of that years Pretenders vehicle/animal modes didn't match the shells - which is good because you want something different I guess. Although at the time, I wondered why Octopunch wasn't an Octopus, Longtooth wasn't a boat and it was a missed opportunity to have Grimlock with a big scary T-rex shell! I also thought Pinchers scorpion robot would have been a better fit for Bludgeons shell.

This Junior Headmaster theory- I still don't understand it. What does it matter as to which was the original design intention?
I am only accepting it as a "theory" if the US versions got released months before the Japanese versions!

This Junior Headmaster theory- I still don't understand it. What does it matter as to which was the original design intention? Knowing what the original intention was does explain some of the design choices. In this case those annoying "I am a 3 year old's toy" yellow blobs on Nightbeat's roof. The catalogues also make it a little interesting because the Headmaster Jrs are one of the few 1988 toys that were different in Japan that are in their Japanese colours/form - like Sixknight and Ginrai - look at Buster & Hydra (Darkwing & Dreadwind) they're greyed out. The colours being right suggests they were finished somewhat earlier. Later 88 catalogues show prototype toys and toys in their US colours due to the Japanese versions not being ready. In one case this leads to some toys having their western colour scheme in the Masterforce cartoon! Knowing which came first also tells you which company is responsible for the design. And it is a crucial point in the line as Hasbro and Takara start to go in different directions. There's lots of 88 western toys not released in Japan in any form - dual Targetmasters, w2 Pretenders, Pretender Beasts and vehicles - which, non HasTak moulds aside - was a rarity till this point.
