“POWER IS PRIMAL”

I just realized this is my first time sharing an Optimus Prime figure with you all, and I couldn’t think of a better version to debut. Introducing the ROTB Buzzworthy TF7 Optimus Prime!

Based on a licensed modified Freightliner FLT, this partial figure does an amazing job of bringing the movie vehicle and character to life with unprecedented proportions and articulation. Despite being listed as partial tooling, the only thing that was preserved from the original SS-38 figure were the translucent windows, and the wheels. Everything else on the figure is 100% new.

This figure is an engineering marvel. Traditionally a voyager scale figure is assembled across 9 different molds, but this Optimus is very cleverly constructed using 4 new molds. Yuya at TT is an absolute legend for finding such a creative execution for this character, and solving it so well. Our team was absolutely blessed to have our partners at TT pouring so much love into this design. This figure is uncompromised, and offers masterpiece rivaling complexity and articulation at a Voyager scale.

The deco on this figure balances some traditional movie Optimus colors, with some delicious metallic highlights. Due to the low tool count, a number of the ABS parts needed to be painted in order to correctly match the mechanical detailing and body colors, So if you are asking yourself, “why wouldn’t they have just molded X part in X color”, that is likely the reason why.

I have to give a shout out to @naveskoorb for forfeiting an Optimus figure, and entrusting me to take one on. I can understand why he’s your favorite .

NOTE: I won’t be sharing full Screen to Toy asset breakdowns prior to the films release out of respect to our studio partnerships.

Oddly enough both the Studio Series and Masterpiece release for the Bumblebee Optimus Prime were sculpted as Generic Cab Over trucks. While ROTB Optimus utilizes a licensed Freightliner FLT chassis (thanks @transformersaltmodes , i totally listed the model incorrectly) that more closely matches the modified vehicle used in the film.

An engineering marvel it may well be, but I'm still not sold on it - and having seen it side by side with the Bumblebee movie version I think it's because it's too slim. The BB version is broader, and feels heavier, and whilst this newer version may be more accurate to the screen model, I think I just like the BB version because its proportions, along with the use of silvery (and not gray) plastic, make it feel closer to the original G1 toy. Yes, I am a massive hypocrite.

I will of course get this when it's on discount anyway.

And then possibly again if they do a Pinwig's Premium Finish version.

And that, actually, is also my problem here. This SS version is kinda nice, has some nice detailing to it, but is it £55 worth of nice? Is it nicer than the mainline version that's only £30? Probably not, actually. But is the £60 Takara exclusive version nicer than both? Sort of, myabe? And also not? They're just all different. There's just too many of them now to know what I actually want to get...

I can understand why they made a transforming toy but I'd have rather seen a straight action figure. And I must admit, I didn't think of it as an exo-suit while watching: more of a Nebulan or Kicker style suit of armour. Hang on, transforming? That's not screen accurate. This is Studio Series!

Based on a modified Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8, we worked closely with the team at Porsche to bring this figure to life.
I love the unique subtleties that we executed for the film like the front plate delete that flushed out the front bumper, blacked out headlight trim and the blue on silver livery that was so iconic to the original character design. Given how limited the production run for this car was, the screen used examples were all modified to look like the wide body 964, but were each designed to execute particular driving sequences, like high speed reverse. The sound design however, used a true to life naturally aspirated RS 3.8 to capture its indistinguishable roar in the film.

But enough about the car, let’s talk the toy! Mirage was developed early on in the films production and even saw a major update to the upper body halfway through production. Based on the placement of the vehicle parts, we continued to develop the figure up until tool start. But car parts got to end up somewhere, which has always been a challenge for many of the live action character designs.

I had an awesome time working with Shu Umezu at Takara Tomy who did an incredible job of bringing a physical form to the transformation, and amazingly doing it while maintaining an almost completely uncompromised vehicle exterior. Generally the bodies of vehicle modes are intersected by non paintable nylon hinges, which work fine for molded base colors, but stick out on painted panels. In the case of Mirage, the entire exterior of the car needed to be painted silver, and include the blue livery throughout the vehicle design. In fact the only part of Mirages entire alt form that couldn’t be painted was the asymmetrical torso hinge on the roof.”
