I have...no idea what a wifi USB stick is. Essentially I just want to connect with wifi to the laptop in the bedroom as it is the warmest room in Winter. If I can't do that I'll need a new laptop -Ralph

It's a bit that goes in your USB socket (you know what one of those is?) that does wifi for you. Google usb wifi for pictures
Found mine. It's sitting here on my Monitor Riser waiting for you.

Good stuff. I shall ask you how to use it when round. I would like to avoid the cost of replacing the laptop for OU work if at all possible.
So do I stick this in and then the laptop will connect to the wifi hub again?

In theory yes. As I said make sure the ethernet lead is connected when you first plug it in just in case it needs drivers.
The practice might be slightly more complicated so you might need to get Andu in to sort it if it doesn't work first time.

Oh no. I hoped just plugging it in would fix it.

It might. And if it doesn't it will get us much closer to fixing it. Because as you stand you haven't got a hope because one small part of your laptop is knackered.

Don't worry, if it is the modem, Phil's wifi stick should be a 'plug it in and it works' solution

So the laptop will get the internet with the ethernet cable. The phone was getting wifi ok and was fine last night as it downloaded podcasts fine. This morning it would not connect until I restarted the phone. This afternoon it won't connect at all but the wee radar thing that shows signal strength looks normal. This is doing my head in. What do I do? The home hub is still lighting up blue as it should to indicate broadband and wireless. HELP! -Ralph

Er.
I went through the BT broadband troubleshooter after fighting with the website for 20 mins. It suggested switching the Home Hub off for a few mins then switching it back on. I did so. Now both laptop and phone are picking up WI-FI...
It can't be that simple, surely???
We shall see. It's only been a few mins..

Ah, yes. Switching it off and on is the default first action to take. It remakes the connection between your hub and the internet. Do that first every time.
That may not have been mentioned because really, if the laptop connection was intermittent , all your device connections should have been.

Devices still connected to wifi...
Surely it can't have been as simple as switching the Hub on and off again? That's mad.

That is sometimes the way it works. I've done it myself plenty of times, going back as far as the 18.8kps modem days. It is usually one of the first things on my troubleshooting list - especially with networking issues.
I have lost track of the number of times it has got me out of schtucky over the years. I do think that it does sound like your laptops wi-fi module isn't entirely reliable though - so I don't think that it is a bad idea to look at a USB wi-fi connector or whatnot in case problems should reoccur (Or for that matter a really long ethernet cable than you can run round to the bedroom come winter if you need to). If I still had a spare one I'd drop it in the post, but unfortunately it got a bit of furniture dropped on it earlier this year and is...not what it used to be shall we say?

Yes I think a magic USB thing is still needed as a back-up. Wifi connection still holding. Has the impossible happened? Has Burns' IT skills been proven to be...dare I say it...SUPERIOR...to Phil's? ?? The stars are going out, one by one... -Ralph

Phil is still reeling at you not having done that BEFORE you asked us!!!!!!!!!! To be fair his phone was still connecting which suggested the problem wasn't with his router. But yes. Restarting something often resets device 'handshakes' when they have gone faulty.

So the broadband keeps falling off or running very slowly. Same problem with phone and laptop. Reboot both several times. Also switched broadband hub on and off a few times.
When the broadband falls off the lights are still showing as working on the hub.
Any clues?
I've tried the speedtest thing on BT's website but it tells me it cannot fetch results.

During brief periods of broadband Bt's sites says the line is fine. As the Hub is over 8 old I phoned and asked for a replacement which is 'free' but costs a tenner to deliver.
Must be the Hub if the line is fine and both devices connect to wifi outwith the Burns Cave.
Computer/connection problems stress me out like few other things as I am quite isolated.

The problem now is that the laptop connection is very slow or constantly falling off but the phone connects fine to wifi. I can't get a phone signal inside flat so have to leave to get a signal so I can connect the laptop to phone on 4g, which works fine.
Yes I have turned off and on the laptop and hub many times.
I just spent a lot of money fixing the screen. Does this mean the laptop is broken again?
This is really stressing me out!

Could be all sorts of things.
If you've a new hub on the way, I'd leave any investigation till that's in place.

Your laptop has a wireless adapter built into it. But if transpires that it's wireless adapter is faulty - you can use a USB wireless dongle which will also do the job. This is the type of dongle that Phil refers to.
