Reset both the Roku stick and WiFi box.
Or get an Amazon Firestick.

Have you reset your interweb since the problem started? How does Ralph do this? Madly, BBC Iplayer is ok on the Roku. -Ralph

But when I have done that in the past it has sometimes fucked up how computers connect to internet so now I never switch the internet box off. The ROKU plugs into tv. When the tv is off at the mains is that off too?

Yes. Unless it is powered by magic.
There should be an on/off or reset button on your WiFi box as well. Use it. Things should reconnect ok if you give them time. Your laptop might need a restart to connect again. You have a recent WiFi box so it should cope.

Switched the internet on and off and the problem persists. Prime and Netflix are fine on laptop so the issue is either Roku or the tv.

Yes. Unless it is powered by magic. I'm not versed in Roku specifically, but I'd be surprised if Roku is powered by the TV via the HDMI port. If it's powered by a USB port on the TV then yes, disconnecting the TV mains will power off the device. But it's generally not advised to power these media dongles from the TV USB ports as they don't supply the power required (I mean Roku devices may be better than Amazon Fire Stick in their power draw, so who knows?) The USB may also have the power cut when the TV goes into standby and you want the media dongle powered for background updates when the TV isn't being used. So the question is - is the Roku plugged into the mains, or powered via TV's USB?

This is a very good point. Both my Now stick and Amazon Firestick are mains supplied thinking about it.

The Roku came with two leads and both plug into the TV. It didn't come with a mains lead/plug.

One HDMI, one USB? The USB would effectively be the mains supply

Find a USB adaptor and power the Roku off the mains. You will have one somewhere, I've got dozens. It's a plug with a USB socket in the side.

Thinking about it this could well be the Roku needs a bit more power than it's getting from the TV....

Felled by a headache so used the phone plug which seems to match Phil's link. Perfect video but this time no sound whatsover on anything I tried to watch...except for Enterprise! That makes no sense!!!

Think the problem is the TV rather than Roku. My other half is hard of hearing so has a magic extra speaker gizmo to plug in. When watching via the Roku it works fine with something with mono audio but when used with a stereo stream no sound comes out. Her device works fine when streaming the same Netflix account on her own tv.
Not sure if the solution is to try an alternative device to roku or save up for a replacement tv. Hmmm.

First test is to take the Roku device to Jen's house and test it there.
If the sound still drops it is the Roku and the problem will be it's processor not being able to draw enough power from the TV to fully power itself.
Either way a new TV will prob be the way to go. Some new TVs will have the ability to do Netflix or Prime built into them already without the need for a separate stick.
But test it at Jen's first. Or ours.
