Liz has an aging Android Tablet she'd like to give to Jonathan for his Birthday or Christmas.
I've got it to the state where it will power up and connect to the internet. Beyond that I don't know a thing about it. I've no idea how to find out which android O/S version is on it and getting software onto the device is defeating me - I can't find the Android equivalent of Apple's app store on the device.
Any suggestions?

I've always been an android fan. What you're looking for is the play store app - which these days has a sideways triangle for an icon, and you can find the android version number by going into the settings (the cog icon) and all the way down to the bottom of the list and the 'about' option.

I think you'll also need a google account (a gmail address) to download from the store. I can't remember, but android generally works better if it has a google account synced.

Android 4 is perfectly serviceable. Until August I was using an android 4 tablet and I think my phone still is 4. Android generally checks itself for updates, I think 4.3 was about as far as that went. Usually the device manufacturer will do its own version of android rather than just pumping out the vanilla version and they'll stop updates after a while to promote new devices. I found my Nexus 7 chugged when it updated to Android 5 so I manually flashed it back to 4 and switched off the auto update.

Games might be a different matter, however Minecraft is old enough it should work. The play store usually doesn't give you access to an app if it won't run on your system. If I go to an app, it says 'this will run on your device' under the buy button.
