I don't play computer games.
But my eldest does. All of a sudden.
And she speaks some kind of strange gibberish....
I need advice on this alien tech, friends. What the hell is this lark all about? She wants something called 'Breath of Zelda'...? Nintendo Switch has been mentioned, but that's way too much. Wii U? What will this 'Zelda' play on? Do games consols work on the telly?
(Oh fuck what's happening....?)
Please help me....

Wii U will play breath of the will, and yes it uses an HDMI connection.
It is however old and no longer supported.
Switch is the current tech and will be around a few years yet.

Breath of the Wild is a Nintendo game and so only available on the Wii U and Switch.
All your games consoles will plug into the telly.
Switch is the future.
Wii U is old and they're not releasing games for it anymore. Looks like you can get one for about £200-250? But eeeeeeeeeeh
The Switch is expensive though! It is £270 and Breath of the Wild is a £50 game. The advantage of the Switch is that it is also portable.
You will also want a screen protector because the screen will inevitably get scratched otherwise

If you buy her a Wii U she will become terminally uncool and disown you.
You have been warned. You do not want to be *that* dad.
Actually, if you buy her a Wii U, Blueshift will disown you.

If you buy her a Wii U she will become terminally uncool and disown you. You have been warned. You do not want to be *that* dad. I agree with Pinwig here. If your kid wants a Transformer, they don't want a Gobot (YES I KNOW GOBOTS ARE COOL TOO) The advantages of the Switch are: - It is cool
- There are more exciting, new games so she (but more importantly YOU) will be in the 'in' crowd
- She will need to buy the games so you can have her doing all household chores forever to earn enough pocket money (is this still a thing??)
- The Switch is portable, so you can instantly pick it up and play it on the sofa or on car journeys
- There's lots of multiplayer and nice family games
- Whilst lots of games are expensive, there's quite a few nice cheap ones (Stardew Valley is only a tenner!)
- If it all goes horribly wrong, the Switch is likely to keep its secondhand resell value for a good while the Wii U won't
Basically the Wii U sort of failed as a console. While it had a few good games, there wasn't a huge amount and it's all old and outdated now. Meanwhile the Switch has stormed it out of the gate and it's what the cool kids have. The disadvantages of the Switch are, well, the price and the build quality is a bit rubbish given how expensive it is (mine is an early one and so a bit worse than others, but its still ok). A tempered glass screen protector is a must from day 1 (they're only about £6-10 but you really can't go without one. The dock is hard plastic with no padding and WILL scratch an unprotected screen!)

I knew my Cyber-pals would come through for me. This is all so alien to me! Off to PC world to investigate further... It maybe the Switch is just too expensive for us though. But there really isn't a 'step down' is there? Are these VR headsets any good?

PC World won't sell a Switch. Your best bet is Argos. Or Amazon (Amazon are great Shockers) VR headsets are like £300+ AND you need a console

Get a Gameboy, Shockprowl. -Ralph They've not made Gameboys for decades, Ralph. The replacement for the Gameboy was the DS and then the 3DS The Switch is the replacement for the handheld AND console as it does both. Now, Shockers, you could alternately go for an X Box or PS4, but they will be comparable prices and they wont play Nintendo games. It sounds like your little one has bought into Nintendo! The Switch has both Breath of the Wild (which it shares with the Wii U) and Mario Odyssey (which is a Switch exclusive) which are both 10/10 and will keep them quiet forever

Wii U is uncool but lots of people will probably be trying to offload them to get a Switch so, if bought second hand, value might compensate for lack of cool points. Somewhere like Facebook market would be a good place to look as you can check the condition in person before paying.
It partly depends how old your daughter is and how desperate she is to be hip. You probably won’t want to hear this but I remember asking for a NES age 12 because I thought a SNES was too much to ask my parents for. I would have been happy with the former but when I got the latter!! Best Christmas gift ever (better even than Doubledealer). And, actually, because the console was around for years to come, my parents made the smart choice financially . That said wii u to switch is a smaller jump in terms of technology than NES to SNES, in my opinion.
You could get a 2ds, which is Nintendo’s old handheld and does have Zelda games. This console is good value and is still being supported and has a huge library of great games. It’s well suited to first-time gamers. It isn’t cool like the Switch but I don’t think it’s uncool like the wii u. Whatever you decide, pc world is probably a very bad place to buy from. Maybe it’s a handy place to see the consoles in person but the price should be cheaper online. A large supermarket would probably be a petter high street option. Hard choices at Christmas whatever you decide so good luck!

Are these VR headsets any good? NO! Don't go that route. Overpriced gimmick. As Phil says, a 2DS might be a viable alternative. Handheld, Nintendo games = Mario & Zelda etc, current tech = games still in production. It's the modern equivalent of what Ralph considers a Gameboy to be. There is also the 3DS, which is a glasses-free 3D version (which came first actually, the 2DS came in response to demand for the same games from a) people who don't give a fuck about 3D and b) parents worried about the 3D console damaging kids' eyes). I had a 3DS. Sold it to buy a tablet, but as a games console it was a nifty thing. I kept my original DS instead. But if you want to be *cool*... Switch.

When did Gameboys stop??? -Ralph Twelve years ago, chum. The last version released was the Gameboy Micro in 2005. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_MicroI still have one; brilliant tiny Gameboy with a bright screen. When that came out, Nintendo also launched the DS, which has become the replacement line for the Gameboy.

The 3/2DS is excellent with a huge back catalogue, but is on the way out (think there is only one major game left? Might be mistaken)
And of course it won't play Breath of the Wild
