Whelp. Half of media is now owned by Disney.
Curious what will happen to Lucifer and Gotham. Curious what'll happen to the Fox channel altogether, actually.

I know the Murdochs still have their news empire, but as long as this deal removes some of their influence from popular culture I'm very good with it.
I wonder if Disney intend to continue to use Fox as a brand or if it will be quietly replaced. The TV side Id be happy to see go, but 20th Century Fox maybe has more cache.
Disney having control over TV Batman doesnt seem like a situation that will make some unhappy though.

Well Disney owns a major television network here. ABC. We have five major networks- ABC, NBC, CBS (owned by, or owns Paramount), FOX, and CW (owned by Warner Bros) If Disney were to sink Fox as a network because it's competition to ABC, then every show Fox has goes down with it. As for Gotham and Lucifer, Disney is happy to make money off their competition? But at the same time, they don't like to share profits. They would rather sink the entire ship and ensure no one gets anything, than share. (Yeah, their deal with sony over spiderman is an anomaly here. But I think it's because spiderman is too important for them to destroy, unlike F4) They also are likely to sink Gotham and Lucifer just out of sheer spite to Warner Bros. CW saved Supergirl after CBS cancelled it. But they didn't save Constantine or Powerless after NBC cancelled them. As it is they're now playing Superhero Musical Chairs with Black Lightening, Supergirl, iZombie, and Legends of Tomorrow, because they don't want superheroes/comicbooks every day of the week.
But basically, if Fox Network goes down because Disney doesn't want it to compete with ABC anymore, that's a pretty disastrous thing for television all over the world, for people who enjoy american shows. Simpsons may be the only thing to survive, and Disney may not let them have the free reign that Fox did.
For the movies, they just absorbed a hell of a lot of popular franchises and properties, such as Aliens and Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fox was gearing up to relaunch their Animation department, too. We can guarentee that's now dead. On the flipside, Anastasia just became a Disney Princess.

I dont for a second think fox network will be axed, I was thinking more about rebranding. Assuming fox news keeps being fox news will disney want the association?

I'm thinking fox news and fox sports will be rebranded, as they're no longer fox.

If Disney Sports doesn't have the Micky & Donald version of Laugh a Lympics, I'm not interested!

Which might solve Murdoch's long running problem with 100% owning Sky the broadcast medium as opposed to Sky the television stations.

Whelp. Half of media is now owned by Disney. Ayup. Which is why I'm not entirely sanguine about this deal - it moves the US Entertainment industry that much closer to a monoculture, and monocultures are never a good idea, whether in nature or in business. I also am not entirely comfortable with the fact that News Corporation has suddenly found itself with a larger warchest as a result of this deal. The Murdoch's are not exactly the sort of people likely to use the influence they can gain with that money in ways that are likely to impress me. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the Fox channel programming survives actually - one of the things that strikes me about this deal is that it potentially gives Disney's streaming service an interesting shot in the arm. Of course, we can expect most of this stuff to get pulled from Netflix once the current contracts end, and very likely in one form or another it will end up on some form of Disney run streaming service. It gives them a heck of a lot more material to play with both in terms of current and legacy output to use to bootstrap up a service. What looked like an odd match-up between whatever Disney's offering ended up as and Netflix does start to look like a much more even fight. (Which likely is not something Netflix is viewing with any sanguinity to be honest). Interesting times. Karl (Edit - as to whether Disney try to kill Gotham, I'm genuinely can't tell if that is a bad thing or not. I go back and forth pretty much scene by scene on whether it is just horrific or gloriously horrific. :-) )

I very much agree with all those points. Yet just about the only thing I'm seeing is "DIZNEY HAS THE X-MEN BAAAAACK!!!!" I am not very thrilled with the long term imitations. Monopolies are generally horrible things.
I stopped watching gotham when Supergirl was put opposite. But from what I've heard, it's gotten really carried away from it's original core premise. And then aging Poison Ivy up into an adult so they could sexualize her, and then have her be all over Kid Bruce is all kinds of skeevy.
But I am *really* invested in Lucifer.
