So having been reading the Christmas issues of the thirty years ago comics this week, and with the prospect of the annuals of 1987 to come as a Christmas rereading treat, it made me think - what do we get these days in terms of special Christmas issues? 2000AD flies the flag still. I noticed in Smiths yesterday that there is the Viz Christmas issue, and there's a Private Eye annual, but what else can the discerning Christmas periodical reader hope to pick up? I didn't see a lot.

The problem is that many magazines are sold internationally nowadays, which makes publishers reluctant to have a snow-laden cover. It looks great in December, but kills overseas sales when they show up in the US in Feb/March. I highly recommend 'All About History' this month. It contains several articles on Christmas traditions through the ages and offers some fantastic Christmas illustrations. It's a bit pricey at £5.99 though, due to the calendar gift. Comic wise, erm... Does the Christmas cover for the Spiderman/Deadpool reprint or the Dr Who Robot Santa statue count?

The Christmas edition of the Beano looks fun. I almost bought it, then realised we're still 4 months away from the event and I'm wishing away 1/3 of the year.

Interesting. There is usually a Beano Christmas special but I was not aware the Summer one had gone off sale yet! I only read it last week!

I have now seen for myself the 2018 Summer Special and the 2018 Beano Christmas Special side by side in a WH Smiths. Both together is mad but as for the latter...it's only August!!!
