One of our members has asked me to explain the scoring in cricket.
One run is scored every time the batsmen run down the pitch changing ends. The batsmen can keep running until the ball is returned to the bowler
Four runs are scored if the ball crosses the boundary rope having touched the ground first
Six runs are scored if the ball crosses the boundary rope without having touched the ground first
A team score of 310-7 means that the team batting have scored 310 runs so far but 7 of their batsmen have been dismissed (got out).
A batsman can be dismissed in the following manners:
being bowled (having his stumps knocked over), LBW (he got his legs in front of a ball which would have hit a wicket), Caught by a fielder, Stumped by the wicketkeeper (batsman has stepped off his line and the wicket keeper uses the ball to knock the bails off the stumps) run out (fielder uses the ball to knock the bails off the stumps before the batsman can complete his run) Hit Wicket (batsman knocks the stumps off by accident) (and a number of other minor ways that you never see)
Any more questions?

That actually does make sense and explains a lot.
Thanks.

I will never understand cricket. From what I hear, neither will certain Ashes umpires. Martin

Big Phil, I realise this may be difficult without a diagram, but can you explain where all the parts of the pitch are? Gully, Mid-off, Leg-off, G-spot, etc?

Today is the perfect example of something I don't like or 'get' about cricket, the current match is a draw, not because both sides have achieved the same score, but because one team is winning but wasn't able to get the other team all out in time because of the weather. A weird situation I don't find in sports that I follow.

A draw in a first class cricket match is where the game finishes without being able to be played to a conclusion
A tie is where the teams finish with the same number of runs and the side batting last dissmissed. There's been two in test cricket so far

Off to work. Really hoping for a busy day. 15 hours left of the most awful day of the year. -Ralph I struggle with Christmas Day. Find it physically too difficult now. Love family presents and church: my goodness I worked hard this morning, 6 carols, 6 readings, didn't stop for 45 mins, shattered now. Quite like Christmas Dinner but don't like the stress it causes. Could happily leave the rest. Especially boxing day. You wake up to bad news (The England score) and the day drags from there. Can't get out: shops too busy and their illness prevents trip to inlaws.

I love Moeen, I really do, it's just all gone to pot for him this tour. I reckon that injury he picked up early doors was worse than they've let on. Needs to go away and get his mojo back. Still worse places to do that than Kiwi.
But yeah, I'd have played Crane too.
But I'd have taken Rashid and Plunkett to start with.
The moment Stokes got nicked I could see this chain of events happening where something went wrong with Moeen/Bairstow. Stokes' absence plus one of them not firing really exposes the rest of the batting frailty. Thankfully Malan and Stoneman have paid off.

Aren't there four balls involved and broomsticks?

Post by Philip Ayres on Dec 27, 2017 19:10:08 GMT
You're right about there being "four balls"
Four runs are scored if a ball crosses the boundary rope having touched the ground first
Six runs are scored if a ball crosses the boundary rope without having touched the ground first
A ball that is easy to hit to the boundary is sometimes described as a Four Ball.

Absolute game changer for Cook's career in the near future. Should allow him, injuries willing, to annexe Border's consecutive tests record (Cook currently 149, AB was 153) & guarantee his place in the side through the summer.
Before today I'd have rested him for NZ, given the young openers a go togeher, don't see that happening now. Cook/Stoneman/Hameed 1 2 3 for NZ I think.

I'm not sure on hameed yet, it depends how he fares for the lions in windies.
yeah cook was immense and I thought he batted superbly, I hope he gets 6 runs tonight but I fear with jimmy at the other end.
also think broad has just bought himself another series as I was really wondering if he was past it before last night but 50 & 4for probably saved him!
