It's a film which doesn't really work on the small screen. It's very much designed as an audio and visual experience for theatre exhibition. I had seen it on TV and thought it was ok (but much preferred the novel) but it wasn't until I saw (and heard) it on a big screen that I 'got it'. It is amazing on that environment. I've seen a digital print, 35mm film print and 70mm film print editions of it in cinemas. It does tend to periodically tour the art house circuit and the BFI digital restoration of it did get imported into some Cineworlds a couple of years ago. Hopefully the 50th anniversary means it gets put out again so it can be experienced properly. For example bits of it are designed to have the sound go completely silent or have minimal sounds at certain volumes, which does not work at all in a home environment but has a massive impact in a theatre.
