This Sunday there's an actual convention, with actual stars off of the telly, in the tiny wee small town of Burton On Trent. Cool! But... Do you know what's even cooler? The fact that Ed and myself are going to be selling art there! I know, right? I can only speak for myself here, but this is a big step, personally. Taking my art out of the 'safe space' (if you will) of TFNation and seeing how it looks in a more general environment. Exciting, and nerve-wracking, you know? So, all good juju for the brothers Pirrie will be gratefully accepted, and if you're about in the area (long odds, I know) feel free to drop in and say hi! Link to the convention HERE!

You've got my JuJu!
I went to Burton once, for a football match. Burton Albion we played. Lost 4-0. I remember because at the time the team were managed by Brian Clough's son Nigel, and I sat behind the legendary Cloughy senior in the stand.
Thus ends my connection to Burton.

Could have gone better, I think. But I think that we've learnt a fair bit, and hopefully if we take the plunge again we can do better.
We certainly need more visibility, so gonna be on the look out for some boards we can pin stuff to.

Yeah, it seems that the Burton event was the least comic friendly event I've been to, even in comparison to other Em-Cons. It was a little like trying to sell steering wheels at a mototcycle show!
We could use a decent comic convention around here, really. Especially as it costs so much to travel. Even Birmingham is a significant outlay in terms of travel and accomodation, not to mention actual Con-costs.
I'm keeping an eye out though, and we'll see where and what the next step is.

Oh the people were fine! It's just that the con was more focused on the live action guests and tat. Art and comics really didn't have much of a footprint at all, and I don't think it's marketed as a comic thing. Maybe the bigger ones are, but this one was pretty much all about the TV stars.
Don't blame them, that's what's gonna get people through the door after all!

That I think is the general experience of something marketed as a "comic-con".
Birmingham was good the first year, but last year was poor, overcrowded and nobody has shown any inclination to go this year.
Swindon has been just "oh, look at this tv/film star" with all their advertising and not mentioned any of the comic folk attending once even though I know at least one friend of the forum has gone there.

That boils my piss.
Dunfermline Comic Con - is comics only - some props and tat, but no film/tv pish. Same as Glasgow Comic Con.
Probably one of the reasons they are my favourites.

Unfortunately most people who see comiccons advertised are most aware of the term from SDCC so expect something like that. Its great if the organisers can get the balance right, but as Phil said it can go wonky really quickly.
Clearly people enjoyed Birmingham the first year because the crowd last year were mad. But also it seemed most of the comic dealer who attended first time didn't think it was worth coming back the next time.

There were more people selling edible things than comics

BADGES FOR THE BADGE GOD! A little basket of free badges on your table could do a lot of good to entice people in and act as a conversation starter!
