Oh I don't mind when it's just a descriptive label ie 'Cyclops. Leader of the X-Men'. That's fine: keys in a new reader in a team book. It's when it's sassy nonsense like. 'Cyclops. Mad. Got something to prove'. Drives me mad. It's like fingernails down a blackboard. It annoys Old Man Burns. Too many comics currently read like the writers haven't experienced anything other than episodes of Buffy. Read some ******* books, comic writers!!!
Old Man rant over now. I return you all to your regularly scheduled thread.
UNICRON.

We need labels for Wolverine - it's not like he is used much & in 10 titles each month 20 years ago
But this is also a jumping on issue for those who don't know the characters

I think the sassy labelling only really works, if it's been done as part of an in universe character narration as you are following a character's train of thoughts. Taking X-Men, if for example Wolverine has been narrative captioning the issue so far then it makes sense to have captions like - "Cyclops, leader of the X-Men. Uptight and a colossal pain. Nightcrawler, fuzzy elf and my best friend" etc etc. If it's the omniscient narrator then no the boxes should be even in tone.

This thread's title reads like a particularly unbalanced football result. Those FCBD boys are just unbeatable.

They're good but they are no Thunderbirds 2086 or Ravage 2099.

Can't say that it is really my thing either.
My immediate reaction was actually "Spiky. Well, I suppose he is a Chaos God..." Rust for the Rust Throne and all that.
I can't say as I am really that enthused by it as a design.

I shall avoid that on the off-chance I can snag the issue on Saturday.

Can't fault the effort for a freebie. Decent length strip and some back matter. Same standard as current IDW TF so more of the same. Appreciation or lack thereof will depend on how current readers feel. Don't think it will hook any new readers.

There is a text feature at the end of the issue which recaps IDW history. Unicron has already appeared before & states when - but keep it spoiler hidden here for when. But there is no mention of D-Void so he is not Unicron or linked to him.

I see. Huge gap between the FCBD day issue and #1. No chance of picking up new readers that way!

It's so the 2 ongoings can get ready for the story. It's not like IDW have released a comic in a limited series before with a story element that follows on from another issue released the month later

RID Strongarm in preview of latest issue - but is it multi universe or that they (the RID lot) are from another planet?

I'd say different planet unless we're told otherwise. We already have Beast Wars, Beast Machines, RID 2001, Prime, and probably an assortment of Armada characters that I've forgotten, running around in this and the Functionist universe. I was amazed to see BW Dinosaur Megatron and BW TM2 Megatron appeared in the same panel in an earlier issue.

I've only read #1 but seen that #6 is oversized - not bigger than US size that being more pages like the annuals.

I see Amazon UK are shipping pre-orders for the paperbacks, but (presumably due to the Easter holiday) it will take 1 week to arrive. Proceed on your way to oblivion very slowly.

Do the events of Unicron #1-6 follow on or do they go Unicron/Lost light/ Optimus each month?
|
|
|
Post by Andy Turnbull on Apr 22, 2019 15:45:42 GMT
Lost Light is disconnected from it somewhat so there's no real connection, save the acknowledgement of it in the final issue of Lost Light.

Picked up the trade for FCBD - I did pay for it I should add.
A much more satisfying read as a whole.
