Right. I seem to be slowly amassing a pile of spoken word and soundtrack records so I need a player. The problem I have is that I am utterly confused by reviews online. I don't need a super-douper expensive one as I really won't be listening to much music but the cheap ones often have bad reviews for damaging records. As I have picked up a few limited edition short-run releases this is a worry as they can't be replaced if damaged by the player.
Any recommendations?

I find looking at record player reviews really tough, as you never know if bad reviews are because the product has issues or if they are just from super snobby audiophiles. I understand that the cheaper briefcase style ones don't have adjustable weights on the arms and can have too much pressure, potentially damaging records, but I don't know if that is an issue, or just an issue if you are a super high-end collector

As in interested observer: Does the aforementioned player have the capapility to plug in an external amp and speakers?
I am one of those annoying audiophiles, I'm afraid.

Got one of these for my Dad last year. Built in speaker are pretty good other speakers can be connected. Its also got a rechargable battery so is portable. Cant say how it compares to other options but it played Bruce Willis' Return of Bruno fine which is good enough for me. Bluetooth too. Only thing its missing is the converting to MP3 which Dads other record player does. Its a useful feature but a bit faffy.

Inside was a record player. It felt a bit cheap and tacky out the box and I got The Fear but it plays absolutely fine and does the job. Of course it was tested by side A of THE MUSIC FROM BAGPUSS.
The Bagpuss release is lovely. Very nice feeling sleeve and inside was a postcard with a download code and a large booklet. Very nicely produced item. Good graphic design on the packaging. Also sounds good.
