The more you think about it, the more you realise that these Blu-ray versions aren't actually the TV stories. They're Frankenstein creations pieced together to recreate the stories. It might be that these are a step beyond the clean up and restoration of the DVD versions - a step too far. I await the chance to watch Castrovalva in HD to see.

The question then comes down to whether you need the sets just for the new extras, but then I believe those can be bought individually as digital downloads.

Seeing a 12 cert on the Season 19 Blu-ray seemed odd to me, and indeed all bar Castrovalva of the DVD versions are PGs (Castro is a U). So this 12 is for what? Naughty language in the new extras? Janet Fielding I bet.

A release gets an overall rating based on the full contents so if an extra feature rates higher than the main feature then the full release gets that rating from the BBFC.

Yes. That's why I'm saying what in the new extras caused it to get bunked up to a 12.
*checks*
Aha, the new Making Of for Time Flight is a 12, as is the studio footage for that story.

DWM is putting out a 12th Doc Special on the 13th. Not included in subs so I will have to hunt for it in the wild!

What, you mean it's a special in addition to the usual ongoing specials? (like the last clothing one)

Yes. It's an additional one covering production of 12th's first four episodes.

Interesting. So the 'Companion' series that used to be part of the main specials line, which seemed to have been replaced with the 'Yearbook' specials when Capaldi started, is now returning as it's own line, alongside the existing specials and the bookazines.
And given this covers four episodes of series eight, it'll be a loooong time until they get it up to date.
Hmm. I think I'm specialled out with Who. I still buy the bookazines even though I don't read them. At this rate DWM will be publishing as many specials as regular issues.

I read in the Panini email newsletter that the 12th Doc special is a revised reprint of the Complete History partwork. So probably no need to own both.

The release schedule for these sets does my head in. No consistency in the pattern, but if this is coming two months after the Pertwee one it seems they're speeding up a bit. I did wonder about the intention here; if they're intending to do sets to represent each season, the line will probably run past the lifespan of Blu Ray as a commercial format if they keep to 3 a year.

Well the VHS range outlived that format as a whole and the DVD's outlasted DVD as the primary home video format so it is in keeping with historyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

DVD still is the primary home video format worldwide, sales are higher than Blu Ray. Blu ray is already on the way out though - companies like Samsung have already stopped making BR players while DVD lives on because it's cheaper.
At three sets a year that'll be an eight year run. I would imagine Who fans will still be up for buying discs, which is probably why this series has always been badged as a limited edition, but it's going to be a stretch I think. I can see them wanting to get these sets out as fast as possible, which might also account for the number of errors creeping in.
