First Contact stands alone among the four as top quality cinema, up there with the even-numbered TOS movies. Well paced, well directed, with an outstanding guest cast outshining most of the regulars. Plus the Borg. It's a worthy successor to TBoBW.
Generations is weird, since it has the TV starship but lit in a way that makes it feel like a different ship. And it's part-TOS, part-TNG. But it maintains the tradition of TNG episodes featuring TOS cast - Sarek, Unification, Relics - and can be viewed as part of that story set.
Insurrection and Nemesis are sub-par but do no harm, so I'm going to keep them for completeness as I have the rest of TNG in DVD form.

I have a soft-spot for the TNG films though feel they have not aged as well as the TOS ones. The TOS ones (more by accident than design) really feel like an ongoing story with a beginning, middle and end that push the characters on. The TNG ones are just big episodes. There's a lot I like about them but they're just not a patch on the series. Also, all 4 of them have exactly the same ending: Buff Picard gets into fisticuffs with The Bad Guy. The TOS ones had more variety.
I never tire of watching the TOS films: they were a huge part of my childhood and are my favourite movie series ever. I even put them above the likes of the Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones, etc.

Yup. Love TMP. A cinematic masterpiece. I still remember how exciting it was when the BBC showed it when I was very young and seeing their advert for it "later this evening". I didn't know I was supposed to think it was rubbish until I read books about Star Trek as a teenager.

TMP is superb. Yeah, sure, now, with older cloudier eyes, it's clumsy and awkward. But back in The Day, as Doc' says, IT WAS AS GOOD AS STAR WARS.

And First Contact is pure cinematic gold.
As are all the other TOS movies.
....except 5. Sorry Doc'.
The other TNG movies are indeed weak. Generations is the best after First Contact.

I even put them above the likes of the Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones, etc. -Ralph I finally got around to buying the Trek Movie Collection on lovely Bluray. This was part of my grand rewatch of as much trek as possible before Picard starts. Ive already got through Enterprise Disco and TOS this year. Even if in a slightly confused order. Ive started watching TAS but I didn't want to rush through them as they are totally new to me. I suddenly find myself with 20 odd episodes of new TOS to enjoy and want to savour them. So that led me to the movies. I was shocked to realise that I have never owned any of them before. The closest I came was a recording of Undiscovered Country off Sky. I also havent watched most of them all the way through for a very long time. So far watched 1-5 and really havent disliked any of them. TMP has a different feel from, but I can imagine it would have been stunning to see the Enterprise like that on the big screen when it wa first released. Im wondering if it was the first time Ive seen it all the way through. I remember it being on one new years day 1993 or earlier, but I didnt see it all. Then I read the novelisation. I dont think Ive watched the whole thing though. 2-4 really are like a whole second season of the reboot. Actually TMP feels like the one of special that was popular enough to lead to a full continuation. Which I guess makes 2-4 season 1 of Phase 2. Gonna have to side with Ralph here 5 is good. At least up to that final act which in fairness isnt bad, it just feels more like a tv episode than movie. Some bias here 5 was the first Trek film I saw at cinema. Bizarrely its the Yosemite scenes that I still remember. But I honestly like the character interactions. The cast, the uniforms the bridge its wht I picture when I think of Star Trek. Its a strong start to season 2. Sadly we then jump forward to like season 7 of Phase 2 with Undiscovered Country so we miss all the exciting season 2-6 adventures. Undiscovered Country tonight I think.

I may make them my new Zardoz.

Wow Undiscovered Country looks good. Vfx are leaps and bounds beyond what had come 2-7 years earlier.
I dont know if its budget, use of CG or just the experience of producing 5 years of TNG but the Enterprise never looked this good before. Still my favourite Trek film.

And just for the hell of it I started playing Encounter at Farpoint on Bluray and Netflix side by side. I dont know if Netflix are using the remasters but it doesnt appear to be in HD and looks pretty poor in comparison. I'll stick with the Blurays for now.

I find the quality of TNG on Netflix to be much better than DVD but not Blu-Ray sharp. Compressed streams will not look as good which is why I must get the blu-ray set at some point!

The last several years before the remasters, all E-D toys, drawings, CG, and stuff all started havibg those panels and other gribble all over it.
I always had thought that that was new details being retconned to make it look more visually interesting in our high-res world.
But when the HD remasters happened, it shocked me that they were always there! The ship had always been that intricate. I love the HD remasters.

Damn! Farpoint isnt bad. Qs always value for money and I still remember the excitment of seeing the episode for the first time, probably as a video rental, so Im always kind of happy to watch it. But the next few episodes. Yeesh.

I see bits of Voyager on Horror when they're on before Space 1999. They're stretched to fit 16:9 and look absolutely awful.

And for some reason I just can't get Netflix playing TNG smoothly without horrid blocky artefacts all over the place (most notable on uniforms) on any device in my current abode no matter how I change the broadband and device and service settings. TNG Blu ray set come payday methinks! -Ralph

I think so. I just wasted an hour of my life fiddling with settings thinking things were wrong with broadband/devices and then I thought to try watching random Discovery on Netflix and that looks fine.
Has Netflix suddenly switched to shite masters of TNG? It looked fine before.

How did I never catch that before?

TNG and Disco s1's are very similar in that both have a tone which goes all over the place while a revolving door of producers try to figure out what the show is.

Hmmm. Three of the second batch of Short Treks are out*. Um. Er. They're a bit crap. Loved the first batch of Short Treks but am finding this run to be just lacking. They don't add anything and struggle to fill the running time. More like disposable 'extra features' material on a DVD than the mini episodes of last year. Hopefully the 2 cartoon episodes and the Picard tie-in will bring sonething inventive to the table.
*In the US and Canada only.** **And yes, I will watch them again when they are available in my country.
