Couldn't find any jobs to apply for today.
If nothing happens by mid-Sep (2 months before the lease on the flat runs out in mid-November) I will be forced to look elsewhere if I can't get work here as the letting agency will want to know if I'm staying on then. I don't want to leave Edinburger (so much less violent than Glasgow) but I may have no choice if I want to eat.

Off to buy school shoes today. She can't be going to school already! She can't! Isn't she going to school in September like everyone else?

Off to buy school shoes today. She can't be going to school already! She can't! Isn't she going to school in September like everyone else? Speak for yourself, Graham. Ralph, while my Glasgow visits have never been anything but a pleasure (no doubt through careful planning of routes and whatnot), the anecdotes of rowdiness and aggression have been dizzying. How wide are you casting your net job-wise? Are you looking south of the border at all? The Cardiff weather yesterday and today has been most disorienting - sunny and blue skies with clouds that rain heavily on you whenever they pass overhead. I've been doing shopping and jobs for a day and a half, including buying a dented and scuffed ex-display coffee table for a fiver and painting it with woodstain so that it looks as good as new. Also woodstained the house's window frames. Now resolved to spend the rest of my week off with my feet up, catching up with my reading and music. Marked the start of my resolution with a nice pub lunch. Mum in Bristol suffering from nasty panic attacks linked to her Parkinson's and going into hospital for a bit. Kind thoughts and prayers would be gratefully appreciated. Martin

Martin I've obviously been focussing on Edinburger as this is where I am living, but if nothing comes through soon (ie next couple of weeks) I'll just have to start looking UK wide. I can't stand the thought of having to retreat back to Glasgow and the feeling of just going backwards yet again. I really haven't enjoyed my 30's thus far. -Ralph

Thanks, both. Ongoing lucky thoughts in Ralph's direction, and a fine B5 quote there in Nick's sig.
Oh, and a happy b-day to Kolonel Kool.

More bullshit was heard coming from the mouths of my Transformer-hating workmates today. They asked me first how the convention went and which guests were there. I told them that there were comic book artists, a comic book writers and voice actors there among others and they wondered why I had even bothered to turn up just to see what they called 'the unimportant people behind the camera.' It was then that they explained that if they ever went to a Transformers convention they would want the guests to be the stars of the live action movies AND NOBODY ELSE! They claimed that it would be a waste of money if any guests other than the movie stars themselves turned up!
To further their point about their hatred for Transformers they also said everybody who visits internet forums are all 'dangerous stalkers!'
So now you know!!!!

Panic attacks are not pleasant Martin. I shall keep my fingers crossed for your mother.
I was most surprised today, I got not a birthday card from my team at work but some caramel-and-chocolate coated flapjacks. I did not know the latter even existed. They tasted very nice too and I duly shared them with the rest of the team (partly in self-defence, because otherwise I would probably have scoffed them all by lunchtime and been unable to move).
I have however decided that I am going to have to replace my mobile phone. It decided to stop sending (but keep receiving) SMS a couple of weeks ago and nothing I can do seems like it is going to bring it back to functionality. It has done well though, equalling the record for longest serving mobile phone with my original one (and far outstripping the two stolen and one mysteriously self-bricking ones in between). Time to head to the very bottom end of the market for another cheap comms device methinks.

Bought ROTF Devvy (well half of it) at a car boot sale this morning and had to carry it around for about 3 hours and for the entire time Mixmaster would not shut up, even now out of the back the slightest thing sets it off. Must remove batteries and never replace them.

Brothers,
the thing I've been doing at the Uni of Southampton (my local Uni), I've just gone and done at the Uni of Birmingham. Those boys are well on the ball.
Apart from the mental early start it was a very positive day. With my help, the Uni will have another fuel cell test system up and running very soon.

With the exception of yesterday evening this has not been a terribly good week. Stress levels at my work very high and the strain seems to be telling on me more than a little at the moment.
Fortunately my walk home did a little bit to help my frame of mind. Partly through being the first time I had really seen much of the outside world today when I wasn't dashing hurriedly from one place to another, and partly because I spent a bit of time watching the rabbits grazing on the grass by the railway station and found it somewhat restful to watch. I had to admire the nerve of the one that instead of running for cover just sat and gave me a special hard-stare as I walked past, as if to say that he was unimpressed with my disturbing his meal.

Hope your Mum is feeling better Martin, panic attacks are no fun ride.
I'm still sans job and now a month into my three months of owed vacation pay. I've decided to use all my spare cash to try and pay off the car by the end of it, as if I have to default on credit cards I will but I can't afford to lose the car.
I interviewed with a company in a city three hours away, and won't know the results until Sept. 3rd. I hate this waiting crap. Have had no other offers or interviews show up.

I'm much in the same boat. Not fun, is it? All the best. Coming down with lurgy. The sad thing is that this does adversely affect my day much. Went through to see my folks. They have done something very nice and unexpected for me which alleviates some of the immediate stress. I'm treating next Monday as day zero of Job Search Phase 2. I think I need to consider looking for jobs outside Edinburger, to increase my options. I'd rather stay in the Burger as I like it there and feel I've only recently got settled there but if I see an interesting job elswhere I will just apply for it. Can't do any harm. I am, however, rulling out Glasgow for now. Gearing up to get back properly into writing. Been easing myself back in to it. Youtube vids are fun and all, but I do miss exercising my more serious creative muscles. -Ralph

Glad you've had a reprieve courtesy of family kindness, Ralph, and it sounds like a healthy approach starting the searching from scratch and avoiding just the one city you really don't want to be in.
In the meantime, I look forward to whatever your writing produces. Much as I am an avid enjoyer of the Star Dubs.

There is something to be said for declaring logical new beginning point every so often. It can help one to reframe ones thinking and look at a situation anew.
Like Martin I look forward to reading the product of your keyboard/pen.
Dinogrrl, my fingers remained crossed for you. I hope that something turns up for you soon.

This week's space lurgy peaked last night when I was running a high temperature and had extremely vivid dreams. The best one was when giant space turds invaded the Earth. I was given a cape, which was black on one side and red on the other side and I roamed the Earth to fight them. When I kicked them, they turned white and died. Then, I thought I had woken up in my bed in the flat and that the space turds had cut the power. None of the electrics worked and the lights were out and so I had to kick them as they jumped through the windows in the dark. Then I woke up for real and was terribly confusued for a few minutes.
In other news, my old faithful CD player has died. I need a replacement as I listen to Doctor Who audios on CD. I went out today at the time I thought would bypass most of the festival crowd but to no avail. Alas, when I got to Argos, the one in my price range was out of stock. Just got back, very sweaty.
No joy finding many jobs to apply for this week, which just re-affirms my need to start looking elsewhere next week. I may not be able to get work in Edinburger.
