At Phil's DFIS the furniture moving continues. Last week we shifted a set of shelves into the loft of joy. Phil looked at the wardrobe that was there when we moved in. Phil found out it's as light as a feather. Phil has decided we need another set of floor to ceilind shelves in it's place to hold the joyous things and keep the floor clearer.

A trip to Ikea is planned this week, I require a new "Detolf" cabinet for my animooted and henkei collection. Also, I have successfully purchased a new TV and PS3 this month, this is the first time I have bought such things for several years, most pleased!

After another morning of finding no jobs to apply for*, I was feeling pretty shit so went for a walk. Randomly ended up at Arthur's Seat area in Holyrood Park which I had yet to visit: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edinburgh_Arthur_Seat_dsc06165.jpgIt is splendid indeed, but after clambouring about it for a couple of hours I had to come away as I was very dehydrated. Weather permitting, tomorrow I shall go back properly prepared and equipped to explore more of it. It looks like just one big hill until you get up it and find there are lots of other hills to climb up. It is quietly vast. -Ralph *I was looking at some TEFL courses as the idea of pissing off abroad for a while appeals if I can't get a job here but the idea of doing one short course and getting a job overseas from it seems too good to be true. My scam sensors are tingling.

A better start was had to the working week than last Monday. I actually feel like I have got some things achieved today. It is a nice feeling and one that I don't get often enough I fear.

Going to see my advisor to settle out my courses for the rest of the year (as in till Christmas). It's going to be interesting- there's no exam leave here so testing starts the week after the last lecture.

Kick ass, Nickos!
I'm home after a moderately interesting late shift. I absolutely love finishing at this time (0200), after only doing 8 hours, when usualy shifts are 12 hours. Feels like I haven't been there! And home intime for a relatively normal nights sleep. Assuming I ever stop reading/posting on The Hub and actualy go to bed that is! I blame Phil's Bluestreak/Prowl/Smokescreen reviews!

A new set of shelves added to the loft of joy today has helped no end so as soon as Argos get some more we're having them.

Courses are kind-of sorted. I've decided to take on a bit more than average in the first semester since three of the five classes are basically refresher courses for stuff I did at Glasgow. It takes the pressure off in the second if nothing else. I have another 10 days to decide if I can hack it and can drop one class without penalty.
It's gonna be a lively ten days. I have to buy a printer.

Channel 4 has Transformers (2007) on at 6.20pm this Sunday the 5th of September.| Is this the first time a Transformers feature film has been shown on free-to-view TV in the UK? The new Radio Times has it as Film of the Week, with a four-star rating and the following review: "Earplugs in - this is one of the noisiest blockbusters of recent years, based on the range of plastic toys that were all the rage in the second half of the 1980s, when an animated feature was produced. Japanese cartoon series, novels and comic books have kept the brand alive and in 2007, this Michael Bay-directed, Steven spielberg-executive produced live-action movie took the concept to a new level, grossing over $700 million and spawning two sequels (the third due in 2011 in 3D). All you need to know is this: Shia LaBeouf's suburban teen finds himself caught up in a battle royale between goodies the Autobots and baddies the Decepticons, both races of alien robots who can transform into cars, trucks even aeroplanes. There's a political conspiracy going back a century, and LaBeouf fancies Megan Fox, but never mind that; if the thought of watching giant, CGI-animated metal machines going at each other for over two militaristic hours leaves you cold, you should stay away. If you're in the mood, it might just hit the spot. Again and again and again." A surprisingly well informed review there, and fair too if you ask me. Martin

Clamboured around the volcanic rocks of Holyrood Park again this afternoon. My feet are sore. There are also surprisingly few spots with no people where one can jump behind a bush for a pee without being spotted. Still to get to the highest bit. It is vast. A lot of it also looks like Vasquez Rocks, as featured in a thousand movies and TV shows: www.3drealms.com/prey/images/gorn2.jpg-Ralph

Today, family Shockprowl have been to...
THE SEASIDE!!!!!
Last but one day of Piglet's summer hols, I was back earlier from work than expected, and most importantly it wasn't freakin' raining as it has done these parts ALL MOTHER FREAKIN' SUMMER. We went to Lytham St. Annes, and what a lovely day we all had. Great beach. Digging, frolicking in the sea, hilarity at me get my shorts wet, 2p amusements, and of course a donkey ride. Little bugger struggled with me, but I paid double.

The oven has packed in. The flat owner is coming round Thursday so I shall point out the problem then. I have just been told they are coming at 7pm. No idea why (the last flat inspection by the letting agency was just a fortnight ago). I don't even know their name!

A bloke a few doors down got a phone call last night asking if he could move out in the next hour. This would be a stunning request at the best of times but the hour in question covered dusk, and since the fella's a Muslim he'd been fasting since dawn because of Ramadan and was probably looking forward to going and getting some grub instead of suddenly throwing all his gear back in a suitcase and lugging it a mile or so across the campus to be thrown in with two random guys. Did I mention we don't keep our existing flatmates? I'll keep my criticism light because our internet access and email are monitored, but while we were told when we arrived that our lavish villa accommodation was temporary, we were given the impression we were looking at a month's stay rather than 10 days and our housing contract says we should have 7 days' notice to vacate, as opposed to 60 minutes. I spoke to a Canadian fella at iftar (the breaking of the fast, or 'dinner' to us foreigners) and he said he had had a similar call, but had refused to leave and they didn't call back. Original chap was told that a family was moving into his place the following morning, hence the urgency, but given that there's roughly twice as many houses here as people he became sceptical. A lot of the Americans are miffed that a lot of promises made when we first signed up have either been toned down, reversed or purged from existence, and I can see why when they all have massive debts looming over them. I think a resounding "what the hell is going on?" is an appropriate response. I'll admit to being a bit annoyed that I'll be six-seven grand worse off at the end of the year than originally advertised but I'll survive. At least it means I'm less likely to splurge on a DIY Lancia Stratos kit before I've even got my license. I don't think the Americans have got a leg to stand on to be honest. The contracts we signed were pretty clear- different from what we had been told, but clear in their own text. Oh well. It's still being paid to study in a free house for a year. -Nick

Ralph - that Arthur's Seat is beautiful! I wish we had some interesting topography around here, Indiana is flat and boring. If you want to pursue TEFL, I'd just be cautious and sniff out all the details, there should be places online where people who have done this have posted info.
Nick - you know, that's something I've always been a bit worried about with overseas studying. Will the promises line up with reality? I wasn't promised much for grad school here, but I still had the real kicker of being told they don't accept people into PhD's directly from undergrad, that I still had to go through a Masters, which was several extra years! They changed that before I left, so now people with top undergrad results can go straight to the doctorate. It all worked out in the end, and I hope things will work out for you!
In slightly better news - I got a job offer! From the place where I almost interviewed with my pants torn asunder. Now I have to work out how to pack my house full of shit and move it to a new city.

Earlier in the week, I had seen a sign advertising 'BAT NIGHT: FREE COMMUNITY EVENT' for this evening in the local park and thought: 'ooo, that will be good fun: looking for bats and probably meeting interesting people'. So I turned up and no-one was there. So I went to Sainsburys and bought some toilet roll instead.

I have spent another evening colouring to meet some deadlines. Somehow I have done very little and yet taken ages D:

Funnily enough, I've got a bat night scheduled for next Thursday evening in my local nature reserve. Going on a Bat Walk with Bat Detectors just sounds so cool after watching all those Adam West Batmans. Maybe when they said 'bat night' it meant people were hiding in the park with big wooden bats waiting to beat you up and take your money? If he'd been living in Glasgow at the time, that would no doubt be the case. Martin
