My Nick Radar hasn't pinged yet. I think he's in the air. -Ralph This is Nick remember: he's more likely sat in a departure lounge waiting for a replacement plane that isn't on fire.....

My Nick Radar hasn't pinged yet. I think he's in the air. -Ralph This is Nick remember: he's more likely sat in a departure lounge waiting for a replacement plane that isn't on fire..... Got it in one! I'm at Jeddah airport on the paid wireless at Sbarro pasta restaurant, after deciding that half a bag of Maltesers was an insubstantial breakfast while towing half my body weight in clothes, electronics and plastic tat. I spent the entire day yesterday running around like a maniac filling in my absurdly long pre-departure bullshit list which included walking a total of about two miles in 35C weather with no shade. Fun. Anyway after about six hours of form-signing, being told no by self-important men behind desks only to be told yes after getting someone actually important to give them a thick ear, running back and fourth between the two admin buildings (at opposite ends of the campus spine, naturally) about six times and getting several people to pull rank on several other people, I got my flight. Then the travel agent said they had bought the ticket but couldn't give it to me because the woman who sent the request had forgotten to sign the bottom. It eventually got sorted around 9 o'clock last night. Naturally the flight was cancelled. Probably because there were only about six seats sold. The bloke at the desk said "we have another flight at the same time tomor-" To which I, laden with bags and thoughts of murder, immediately replied "I. Want. To. Go. Home." They got me a transfer to another airline. I bought a ticket for the 20 minute bus ride on the freeway to the other terminal (Jeddah airport is needlessly huge) and am now cooling my heels for the 5 hour wait between the two flights. Anyway, it's now check-in time so I'm off. I'll check back in when I get to Heathrow if the world hasn't blown up and the plane's engines haven't filled with ash and dropped out of the sky. I love travelling. -Nick

Today's half marathon has come and went.
List of injuries I am now afflicted with: 1. chafing and red skin around the area of my indefatigables. 2. Nipple damage - righty took a bit of a beating 3. Sore feet - breaking in new shoes in the race - Very bad idea
Also, some stomach problems meant I was struggling to avoid doing a Radcliffe from about the 5th to the 10th miles, and I felt ashamed and sorry for anyone caught within what I can only describe as "The Blast Zone" - they were not nice smells and I thought at least one of them was accompanied by a follow through (a later check revealed this not to be the case).
The bus back from the finish line to Edinburgh, was one fraught with peril as nausea had me in it's vice like grip, people all around willing me not to be sick. It would appear their willpower was not sufficient.
Thankfully my goody bag from the race came in handy.
oooh boy. Post 13 miles, your body does not have much liquid to spare so the vomiting experience was more painful than normal and what I was doing was akin to regurgitating porridge oats/muesli. Fucking awful and very sore.

Amazing!
Despite a cold, the spots have crusted over and I felt a bit better so went on a brief jaunt to Sainsburys (10-15 min walk away). This was enough to let me know that my body would really like to have more rest, please, so stop trying to buy Transformers toys you fool and stick with the essentials.
I am not someone who does 'rest' well even when full-powered so the last week and a bit has not been fun. I'll take the GP's advice and stay off work tomorrow and shoot for a Tuesday return, to be sensible.
I have a quite frankly awesome beard, though, from not having shaved for 10 days.
Nothing like a shitty period to bring it into perspective that I am usually fortunate enough to enjoy good health.

I return to the Internet after a weekend spent with my sister, on one of her rare opportunities to get up to Scotland that isn't a touch-and-go visit. She kindly treated me to dinner on Friday night - I had a nice mixed grill and side-salad. Very nice indeed. And yesterday we paid a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, to visit the primates (a favourite of mine), the penguins (everyone loves penguins) and to discover that the giant anteater has a cute offspring!
Saturday night was spent watching old Doctor Who ("Ark in Space" with its fantastic bubblewrap monster) and then new Doctor Who. I saw her off on the train this morning and then dondered home to spend the afternoon pottering around the house (reorganising so as to be able to get more things out of boxes and accessible, and deciding that I have too many books, DVD's, Videogames, etc. So begins the Great Purge once again...) and watching episodes of The Shield.
My sister was kind enough to check on my bean plants (she has grown beans several years running) and set my mind at rest that they look like they are getting on ok. The carrot plants also seem to be doing rather well too. Come late-June/early-July I may actually be able to harvest something edible.
Perhaps I need to get a "Keritts" sign for my garden like Rabbit has? *taps fluff-filled head and assumes thinking pose.....*

Right, an inspection reveals last few spots are crusting over and energy returning, but I will not be an idiot and will stay off work tomorrow as the doctor advised. Best to be on the safe side. I'd rather go back on Tuesday and feel fine. I need to be double sure I am contagion-free, what with working with vulnerable adults and the like.
