I had a doctors appointment today as I had some swelling in between my right leg and my groin. It turns out I have a hernia which I have to have surgery for. Because of the positioning of the swelling, I thought it might have been something more serious.

After a run of 10 years doing it I will put to bed telling people stuff RULES and a new gimmick will debut in its place.

Sorry about the hernia, Andrew (I know a few people who've had them now), but glad it's nothing more serious.

Hernias are nasty, but preferable to the alternative as you said.

Yep, not good to know it is a hernia but good to know it is nothing worse.

Glad to hear that the hernia will be fixed and that it isn't anything worse.

Martin - MMath and PhD in Maths (University of Warwick, 1997 and 2002) PS Just kidding. It _can_ be fun. Sometimes. I think. But it's so long ago I can't be sure. There must have been a reason why I stuck with it for so long. There must also have been a reason why I eventually abandoned it to do something else. PPS It can get you jobs, anyway. PPPS Oh yes, I remember what was fun about maths. Using it to do physics.

This morning I saw a learner driver had crashed her car into a wheelie bin and got the mangled bin lodged under the car. The owner of the bin had come out to check the damage while the instructor was phoning his superiors. The driver looked in shock.

I had a friend who failed her first driving test because she was in an accident
She failed her second, unsurprisingly perhaps, for hesitancy.

I have a new wall mounted electric fire with all the mod cons. I made the wise move of reserving it online with B&Q and saved £150, because their online prices seem to be cheaper than they are in-store. Still had to pick it up though, but the huge fire was lighter than it looked.

Being doing a lot of personal reflection of late, spurred on by something work related a while ago that also made start to re-evaluate a few things and think 'life is just too short'. For the past 4 years the big emphasis has either been on 'get a job' or 'stay in job' (and some of you who know me better will know just how much of a rollercoaster it has been) and I think that phase is finally passing me by and I'm also just not as content to be by myself any more (which was fine, actually, it was a life choice I made). Buying action figures and being focussed on hobbies and the like just doesn't have the same fun it used to have and having a decent job just isn't enough to make me happy anymore, by itself. So after doing some research and speaking to a few folk about it, I've signed up for one of these internet dating website things. It comes recommended to me by someone I trust (many of them are obviously dodgy or, er, hook-up sites) so I'll give it a go for a few months and see what happens. The one I'm trying seems quite safe. I reckon the worst that can happen is a few silly evenings.
Ralph of even 3 months ago would have been shocked by this turn of events but I think I do need to make some life changes or ten years from now things will be the same and I'll wonder why everyone says I'm fantastic but at the end of the day when I shut the door it's always just me.

Good for you. As is well documented I took a similar course of action some years back.
This evening has not gone to plan:
You *definitely* don't want my thoughts on ASDA's sasusage stew with rosemary potatoes. Potatoes should be edible after an hour's cooking and not rock hard & fibreous.
Stepped out the door to go to cell group, had a football kicked at me by the local teens who evidently can't read the no ball games sign, dodged it, lost my ballance and collapsed. Had Liz fetched to help me back inside.
The falls are becoming more regular and severe. This is worrying.

I met Gina on a dating site and we've been together for over 6 six years. One of Gina's friends has just got married after meeting his future wife on a dating site. Ralph, these sites are meant to be completely free: www.smooch.com/ www.oasis.com/ I've seen ads on TV for certain other sites that say they are free to join but don't tell you that you have to pay to communicate, apparently these two sites above don't charge to communicate with other members. |<o>|

Cheers. I'll bear those in mind.
I'm trying one now and it's pretty much what I was looking for as there's plenty of back and forth online before it goes anywhere near meeting in Real Life. Doesn't use surnames initially and has internal mail and messaging system so seems safe enough, no rush and little chance of embarrassment. You can check out for common interest, beliefs, values, etc before doing anything.
I'm just trying it out for 3 months to see. I'm pretty surprised with myself but I do need to start moving on from certain past things/behaviours/thoughts! Thankfully no-one in RL has yet to call me a Sad Bastard (or the like) for trying this approach (something I have often been fearful of) but my problem is that in RL whenever I find myself unexpectedly in a 'dating' thing I turn into a block of dull wood. Plus, I think the timing is right. But we'll see. No rush, no pressure. If it ain't for me I'll just turn it off.

Stiff back and painful legs today following the fall last night. Don't think we'll be going anywhere.
I'm starting to worry that the ladder up to the loft of joy may be starting to get beyond me.
