30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #201 Time Wars - Part 3: Fort Max goes for Rodimus and a fight ensues between the future and present day Autobots. Goldbug is damaged when the Decepticon Headmasters reappear. Mindwipe then reattaches Scorponok's head. Just then, Soundwave's crew from 2009 appear, displacing Scorponok's team and blinding him. To the north, Broadside, Inferno and Sandstorm meet Springer, who reveals the Wreckers have been forced to unite with the Mayhem Attack Squad to take down Galvatron. Ultra Magnus brings Goldbug to Max to show him the damage being caused, and Rodimus uses the Matrix to allow Optimus to speak to everyone. Springer's group head below ground and come face to face with Galvatron... and Megatron. Elsewhere, A printing error means Fort Max gains a red head and Rodimus a black and purple deco on the first page of the strip; Colin is abducted by Professor Madprof; and on the letters' page, Dreadwind gets frustrated answering reader questions and oddly states he hopes the toy versions of him and Darkwing don't combine.

Can anyone remember where the strip was printed without the error? I forget if it was a Special or an Annual. Fair made me chuckle when Titan 'recoloured' it rather than just scan the corrected printing.

Stuart made a point on his blog that I hadn't noticed - the cover image is drawn from Ultra Magnus's point of view.

Bah. Max. Scale. Rodimus wouldn't stand a chance.

Max is looking a little condensed there, isn't he.

*slaps forehead*
It's a first-class recolour but what is the point when a corrected printing already exists which could have been scanned?
Not to get annoyed about. Just a head scratcher!

The Collected Comic was after Furman left as editor, so there's a good chance he didn't even know about the fixed version at the time.
It would look better with some more Mr Johnson.

Is this what Lost Light's Rodimus based his new paint job on?

The Collected Comics corrected colour page is not good, it's quite dark. Would look out of place alongside the other pages.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #202 Time Wars - Part 4: Galvatron and Megatron battle the combined forces of the Wreckers and the Mayhem Attack Squad. Battletrap is killed by Galvatron, and Flywheels quickly follows. Megatron shoots Topspin in the face, destroying his head. Springer tries to reason with Scourge to get him to understand why all this is happening. Outside, Optimus continues to explain the situation to the others from his position in limbo and they rationally discuss what few options they have. Back inside, the carnage continues as Carnivac blasts Ravage and Chop Shop is also killed. Carnivac signals a retreat. Above the Earth, the sky boils. Elsewhere, Transformation sets out the categories for the 1988 readers' poll, including the ominous 'least favourite story'; Steve is stunned when Colin robs the NatMidLoyd Bank; and on the letters's page, Dreadwind explains to David Matthews of Greystones that there is a difference between ripping the head off a Transformer, ala Cyclonus's death, and carefully disconnecting it with a series of mental commands, ala Fortress Maximus on Nebulos.

Always preferred The Vampire Lovers myself.
Back on topic, always liked that cover - the red backdrop is nice touch.

It's great. Still early Wildman but you can see him beginning to define his style.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #203 Time Wars - Part 5: Scourge and Fracas return to the Decepticon fortress to try and recover Cyclonus's body. They find Shockwave, driven insane by the logic problem of the time paradox, and Cyclonus's strung up body. Shockwave shoots Scourge. In limbo, Optimus watches the battle on the surface through Rodimus's eyes. The Mayhems and Wreckers fight on and Roadbuster attempts to use a pathblaster to take down Megatron. Galvatron intervenes to save his former self, losing half his face in the process. Sandstorm is disintegrated as the combined forces retreat to their shuttle, but celebrations that Galvatron has been killed are cut short when the Decepticon commander rises again. Elsewhere, Transformation claims that the current Time Wars story takes place after the Matrix Quest one it inconveniently turned up in the middle of; new Marvel title The Sleeze Brothers gets a cryptic first plug; and on the letters' page, the suggestion of a Secret Wars III story featuring the Transformers, Thundercats, Ghostbusters and Dragon's Claws from Alan Bayles of Durham is met with sheer terror from stubbies Rimmer, Furman and Starkings.

Dan Reed is a much under appreciated TF artist.
So distinct and energetic. Which was the perfect follow up to Robin Smith's work, which while I like, didn't quite have the dynamism of Dan. A lot of heft, there was a weighty feel to his Transformers.

Agreed! Dan Reed was my favourite artist during most of the run. (Eventually, I liked Geoff Senior the most)but I always loved the shading techniques Dan used as well as his gritty detail.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #204 Time Wars - Part 6: The carnage continues as more bodies fall before Galvatron and Megatron's combined might. Scorponok wades into the fray and is accidentally shot by Ultra Magnus, who is then battered by Scorponok's troops. Galvatron's confusion worsens as he remembers seeing events through Megatron's eyes differently and is tipped over the edge when he realises he is fighting Rodimus and not Optimus Prime. Just at that point, Optimus appears from limbo having used the Matrix to escape. He squares up to Galvatron. Elsewhere, it's a mixed up issue as the running order is rearranged to make sure February's calendar (featuring a re-coloured copy of issue #134's cover) doesn't have the main strip on the back of it. Instead, it's new Action Force story Strange Bedfellows that takes the fall, featuring as it does Destro's arrival in Scotlandland at Prestwick International Airport and some frightfully boorish RAF stereotypes. Colin's robot is replaced by Colin, putting our hero in jail, and Dreadwing, ousted for the issue, is restricted to a moaning in the Transformation sidebar about how terrible life is. Hey ho.

Reading this story now, it feels a lot like the shuttle scene in the film. All of a sudden the shots count. Get hit, your head explodes. Which is a bit random when for the last 200 issues it didn't. Something like Impactor's death had a lot more, er, impact.

Yeah, it makes you wonder how none of the Wreckers sustained any significant damage in 'Wrecking Havoc'. Galvatron must have really been holding himself back, that's all.

I do think he was at the time.
It was only really when Magnus was around after T:2006 that he seemed to lose his sense of restraint. Look at how he leaves Goldbug alive for Vicious Circle. The way he treats the Seacons in Enemy Action. He clearly was toying with The Wreckers.

Gauging them. he knew who he was going to kill in the Time Wars (as either himself or Megatron) so was just testing their strength in the meantime.
He was happy to try and kill Magnus, because he knew that 80's Magnus wasn't going to be in the Time Wars.
And while he's waiting for the Time Wars to roll around, might as well go and cause a little trouble for the locals, eh? They can't hurt him, so he might as well. He knows he has history on his side. Until he doesn't anymore...

I like the playing with them idea. He did only seem to properly angry when Rack 'n' Ruin did him some serious damage.
