Yay, I thought it had to be the Trainbots and prepared for them, then panicked when I realised it might not be them. GETSUEIwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Getsuei/getsuei.htmFunction: Night Fighter Abilities: Displays his might in nocturnal battles. Can locate enemies quickly even in darkness. Personality: During the afternoon, he goofs off in a daze somewhere. Weapon(s): Night Laser KAENwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Kaen/kaen.htmFunction: Heavy Mobile Fighter Abilities: The strongest of the Trainbots. [Going by the tech-spec ratings, I suspect this should really have been translated as 'toughest'.] Personality: Takes pride in his physical condition. Weapon(s): Power Laser SEIZANwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Seizan/seizan.htmFunction: Mountain Fighter Abilities: Cannot be defeated in mountain battles. Will suddenly display his power on heart-stopping slopes. Personality: Likes viewing Nature's majestic mountains. Weapon(s): Plain (Plane?) Laser SHOUKIwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Shouki/shouki.htmFunction: Light-Speed Commander Abilities: Defeats enemies in battle with his super speed. Can travel across the Space Bridge the fastest when linked to his younger brother Yukikaze. Personality: While fast on his feet and wheels, he can also be pretty irresponsible. Weapon(s): Mach Laser SUIKENwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Suiken/suiken.htmFunction: Plains Warrior Abilities: Can battle on any terrain, no matter how rugged, and proceed along complex routes through space. Personality: Very knowledgeable thanks to his long experience in battle. Weapon(s): Storm Laser YUKIKAZEwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Yukikaze/yukikaze.htmFunction: Heavy Snow Fighter Abilities: Cannot be defeated when fighting on snow. He and his big brother Shouki's Speed Attack is invincible. Personality: Being weak against heat, he hates nothing more than to be linked with Kaen. Weapon(s): Snow Laser RAIDENwww.tfu.info/1987/Cybertron/Raiden/raiden.htmFunction: Heavy Series-Linked Gestalt Warrior Abilities: Transports the Cybertron warriors. Destroys any who get in his way. Personality: Always punctual. Hates Devastar and wants to beat Predaking. Weapon(s): Wing Radar, Leg Beams, Train Bazooka The translated text appears to be contradicted by the tech-specs numbers. According to the numbers, Seizan, not Kaen, is the strongest (7), Suiken the weakest (3). Raiden has strength 10. Suiken is the most intelligent (7). Raiden is less intelligent than any individual Trainbot (4). Shouki and Yukikaze have speed 10, as does Raiden. Kaen is the slowest (6). Kaen has endurance 7 (maybe that's what the Japanese text referred to?), as does Raiden. Getsuei and Suiken have the lowest endurance (4). Shouki is the leader with rank 4 - all the rest have rank 3. Raiden has rank 4. Shouki is the bravest with courage 9. Kaen and Seizan are the least brave (6). Raiden has courage 8. Kaen has firepower 5, the rest 4. Raiden has firepower 6. Most of the Trainbots have skill 6 but Kaen only has skill 3. Raiden has skill 5. Martin

The main problem with the Trainbots is they don't turn into a train, or even trains, they turn into six front bits of trains. And their abilities do not really go with being trains. Can handle any terrain? Fights on mountains? Great in snow? Doesn't sound like any trains I've been on!
It would have been lovely to have a team of six that turned into a complete train.

I'm not familiar with the Trainbots toys - never played with one, but am going with (I think) Seizan (The fifth one on the catalogue) because I like his train mode and colours - that look a little different in any other photos I can see.
Can the toys actually link together as a sort of train?

And Raiden - "always punctual". That has to be a joke! Martin Japanese Trains notoriously are ..... ..... Which leads us onto another problem these have, which may have led to their international exclusion: These are VERY Japanese Trains. Trains, especially older ones, tend to be very much of where they're from. A UK train doesn't tend to look like a US train which in turn doesn't look like a Japanese train. Of all the Train TFs Astrotrain probably works best over all three locations and he's missing his tender!

I'd never seen pics of the Diaclone men inside the Trainbots before. It emphasises how small they are, was a shock when I saw them in person. Also worth noting that the Trainbots are the last new Diaclone moulds used in the original Transformers line. There's a couple of repaints to come and one new Microman mould. Some of the Diaclone variations would lter be incorporated into Transformers in the 2000s by e-Hobby and the like. The Trainbots get individual re-releases in Zone during 1990!
