I've got the reissue set, which means for me Piranacon's main power is the ability to lean forwards and never stand up straight.
My vote's going to have to go for... Skalor. Again, simply because he stands out the most on the catalogue. Although they're all lovely, in their own ways.

Week 62: What is the best Autobot Dual Targetmaster on the 1988 UK catalogue?
|
|
|
Post by Philip Ayres on Apr 26, 2019 5:49:01 GMT
Yay! Autobot construction vehicles! FINALLY! Always bothered me that the Decepticons had the Construction vehicles, surely a theme more suitable to the Autobots?
Against that I was at the time a little thrown by the reduction in size for the Targetmasters, but over the years they've grown on me so much so that I own a set of complete 1988 Targetmasters.
My head wants to call these and their Decepticon counterparts, who we'll get to next week, Dual Targetmasters but I can find no source for the term.
All 3 are fab but not without issues. Landfill's truck bed is filled in - see also Gears and Swerve - and his arms do look a tinsy bit odd, Quickmix's drum doesn't spin and Scoop can't hold his Targetmasters in his hands.
But very young Phil always had a weakness for diggers, and the vehicle mode articulation on Scoop's shovel is fab. Yes, the hands, but the Targetmasters mount on the wrists which works nearly as well. So Scoop wins.
Scoop's also the only one of the six to get a dedicated Generations remake, not a repaint, although Quickmix has a very fun Cybertron toy.

These have always been an oddity in my eyes, just because they never featured as prominently as the original Targetmaster teams. But because of that they've also always seemed a little more special, too.
Also, although I've always been disappointed by how much the Targetmasters themselves are more like little bricks, I've also always much preferred their sculpting over that of the original Targetmaster companions. There's no accounting for taste...

The sculpting for the small Targetmaster gun robots is FAB when you look closely. There's just this feeling, a bit like with the 88 Headmasters, that they're "not quite right" compared with the originals the previous year. The only real difference is these are a tad smaller and the others bent in the middle as part of the TF. Neither had any meaningful articulation, especially compared to the 87 Headmasters and the soon to arrive Micromasters.

These Targetmaster are one of two groups on the UK catalog not to get a Japanese release of some description, either "as is" or recoloured: the other is the Pretender Beasts.
As we'll see none of the Japanese releases this year are toys found in the US but not the UK: they're either found in the US AND the U.K. OR are Japanese exclusives

Easy this week-
SCOOP.
I had him and Quake as a child, some of the last TFs I ever got back in the day. They almost reinvigorated my waining interested in TFs because they were back to being earthy forms. Nice toys. I didn't even mind the Nebulans!
Scoop is also by far the most interesting toy of the three, and I remember he had a good Techspecs.

Oh here we goooo. Big fan of Quickmix! He was the second one I got, but for some reason sticks out more in the memory than Landfill or Scoop. Plus, the cement mixer looked way cooler than the truck and I just don't like Scoops hands

Quickmix for me this week for the simple fact that he is a cement mixer - and I've always liked these for some reason. Apart from that, he has the best robot mode of the bunch and I like the way his drum is used to become the body (rather than just have it as a backpack).
I love the details on the little Nebulans this time around -they are more detailed than a lot of larger toys - and some of them even have guns, swords and capes! Is there a reason why Tracer looks so much like Landmine's shell? I'm sure I've heard/seen these referred to as 'Double Targetmasters' in some official capacity. I'll have to look it up as that's what I've always called them.
And I guess I have to be the one to point out that some of the pegs and holes on these Nebulans are not positioned in the most suitable places...

Full TFU entries by Uncle Bob: www.ntfa.net/universe/english/index.php?act=view&char=Landfillwww.ntfa.net/universe/english/index.php?act=view&char=Quickmixwww.ntfa.net/universe/english/index.php?act=view&char=ScoopLandfill is the strongest and toughest but lowest in rank, Scoop the most intelligent and highly skilled, Quickmix the fastest (as befits his name - but the other two are really slow). They're all courageous and all have firepower 8. The trio made their first appearance in the US strip 'Yesterday's Heroes' fighting alongside the Autobot Pretender Classics and Rescue Patrol on Cybertron. In later US strips they got beaten up by Hook, Line and Sinker, but apparently survived. Quickmix and Scoop starred in the Ladybord book 'Decepticons Underground'. Scoop was named as both an Autobot _and_ as a Decepticon in the annual text story 'Trigger-Happy'. It wasn't just a typo - they actually drew him as a Decepticon with Megatron. tfwiki.net/wiki/Trigger-Happy! Landfill and Quickmix were in 'Aspects of Evil: Scorponok'. Quickmix was also in later Dark Rodimus UK strips. Martin
