Meanwhile the old Cars vs Planes rivalry still exists in the Targetmasters. That rivalry never existed, Phil. -Ralph

Bollocks.
Is Soundwave a plane? Are the Decepticon cassettes also planes? Is Megatron a plane? Is Jetfire a car? Are the Constructicons planes?
But...the Micromasters...they were the 84-86 characters all along!!!!

But I don't believe they were ever intended to be Aerialcons and Stuntibots. I think they were a deliberate decision to give the Autobots a team of planes and the Deceps some cars for a change. Once they'd done it and got it out of their system, they reverted to Autobot cars and Decepticon jets. Martin

Likewise Beast vs Machines is a rivalry the line keeps returning to: Technobots/Terrorcons & Headmasters Beast Machines Car Robots/Robot in Disguise Beast Hunters/TF Go In nearly all of those it's heroic vehicles vs evil beasts, but Beast Machines stands out for swapping it round!

Yes, they exist as well - and fall into the large other bit of the body category outlined above, but you're failing to see the main point.
I suspect this is why you've never for the "first Autobot combiner should have been cars, first Decepticon combiner should have been planes" thing

Cars VS planes was the original story point wasn't it?
And I'm pretty sure the cartoon acknowledges this when introducing the Stunticons and Aerialbots.

As Phil says, Cars Vs Planes is the consistent 'back-bone' of the Autobot/Decepticon armies. '84 to '86 make that UNDISPUTEDLY obvious! Later the fun and appropriate twist of vehicles Vs creatures carried forward the theme.

Sports car patrol? Race track patrol? Military patrol? Battle Squad? Constructor Squad? All planes, obviously We are at no point saying that Autobots have to be exclusively cars and Decepticons exclusively planes. Though it should be pointed out the first wave of Micromasters, back when they were Micro Transformers, IS Autobot Cars vs Decepticon Planes
