Apologies for asking a question off topic- This image of Jetfire vs Megatron, I am convinced I saw this somewhere as a child in the 1980s, but I can't work out how that could be? It's been annoying me since the image was reproduced in the Japanese Generations book. Would any of you guys remember? Martin might know, but I doubt he would wade into this thread. The answer, by the way, is: yes, yes it does. Yes I saw 'Leader' toy-accurate Jetfire Vs Megatron as a child somewhere. No idea where though.

While there are notable exceptions to the rule, Decepticons always leaned into military, weapons, animals, and monsters. Autobots always leaned into civilian vehicles, and humans.
But the fact that there are exceptions, does not mean it isn't a thing. Just like while there are exceptions, Maximals and predacons were generally warm blood against cold blood.

Advertise the comic how? Like an ad in another Marvel comic? Adventure Game books? Not sure I know what they were (which probably means I didn't have them).

For me it's one of those things where it sort of vaguely existed but never in a very substantial way. I definitely thought it was a thing at the very beginning but it never seemed important in fiction and the toyline quickly diversified.
Am I misremembering though or did the Prime series actually make a thing out of it? Like, the Autobots were all ground-based and it was a big thing when Prime got his upgrade and could fly?

Ratchet and Ironhide are not cars. They are vans!!! Vans!!! The catalogues class them as Robot Cars or Autobot Cars, so using that as a precedent for applying the term 'cars' to mean wheeled ground vehicles (and perhaps hovercars), then Phil is right. The original cartoon began with Wheeljack and Bumblebee as Cybertronian cars, pursued by Decepticon jets. The cartoon opening music began with Autobot cars and Decepticon jets transforming to fight one another. In the first series of the cartoon, the Autobots generally got around by driving (most lost the ability to fly in robot mode after the pilot), until the Decepticon Skyfire switched sides, while the Decepticons got around by flying. 'And There Shall Come a Leader' had Bluestreak and Fusion as cars, pursued by Decepticon jets. The first battle on Earth was in a drive-in movie theatre, with Decepticon jets (carrying a few cassette-types) swooping down on Autobot cars. 'Man of Iron' had Decepticon jets chasing Autobot cars. 'The Enemy Within' was about a Decepticon jet and an Autobot car (again, using the term 'car' loosely). And this, from issue #1, regarding a military jet: "The configuration bears a striking resemblance to Decepticon attack forms." And: "An Oregon interstate highway sends a stream of data back into the Autobot probe - almost overloading its circuits with information. Functionally, they resemble the vehicular Autobot forms..." Of course, there were Decepticon ground vehicles and Autobot air vehicles, because armies (and toy ranges) need a variety of machines, but overall the Decepticons went in more heavily for jets and the Autobots majored on road vehicles. Apologies to Andy then. A quick google- I had this as a kid, but bizarrely my memory of it was that it was a novel! Must have been in there then.
