Sadly I fear B'n'B will not be convinced by any theory coming from Mad Theory Phil even if on this one occasion it is not mad and quite sound.

I pretty much buy into this theory. Yes, there were plenty of exceptions to the rule. But the original backbone was indeed that the bad guys were military jets, and that the good guys were road vehicles.
Indeed, they make a whole thing about this in The Key to Vector Sigma, when the Autobots and Decepticons deliberately create the Aerialbots and the Stunticons to address their deficiencies in those areas.
It's not a perfect or consistent pattern, but then what in G1 was? But there was certainly something of it there at the start.

Not to blow your mind Matt, but in Holland, JETFIRE was the leader of the autobots not Optimus 20thcenturytoycollector.com/mb-transformers-part-5/(That was until they sorted out various legal/trademark issues)

Cars VS planes was the original story point wasn't Where? At no point man or child has ANY form of media for the original line stated this! It doesn't exist! Not one comic or cartoon says this. -Ralph

As Phil says, Cars Vs Planes is the consistent 'back-bone' of the Autobot/Decepticon armies. '84 to '86 make that UNDISPUTEDLY obvious! Later the fun and appropriate twist of vehicles Vs creatures carried forward the theme. If it was such a backbone why do NONE of the leaders turn into cars? -Ralph

Sad....
So sad, to see two Grown Men clinging by their bloodied fingernails to their blind refusal to except such an obvious Truth....
Friends, let us sit upon the ground, and Channel together, for the hope that one day Blueshift and The Doctor will find their way out of the Dark Forrest of Foolish Denial, and back into the Land of Obvious Truths.

Isn't there an even earlier 1984 ad with a voiceover that's something like "It's heroic Autobot cars vs Evil Decepticon jets"?

Quickly! I must transform the dinobots to...car mode!!! -Ralph So are we saying that the Constructions, Megatron, Soundwave, Reflector, the Stunticons, the Combatacons and the Insections are all planes. And that's just years 1-2. I mean sure the majority of early Autobots are cars (apart from the ones that are planes like Powerglide and Jetfire and Whirl and the Aerialbots) but only six Decepticons are planes. And once it hits the later eras it's even more jumbled! Of course my era of Transformers was about '87 onwards, or as I know it, the PURE, CORRECT era.

Okay, as I remember it, the adverts in the very beginnning of the comic WERE Autobot cars vs. Decepticon planes. But it never said that that was the the main thing. Nor was it made out as something special when the Autobots gained a plane or the Decepticons a car. So, I'm going to come down on B n' B's side here.

It's been annoying me since the image was reproduced in the Japanese Generations book. Would any of you guys remember? Martin might know, but I doubt he would wade into this thread. The answer, by the way, is: yes, yes it does.

Would just like to point out that the whole cars v planes thing was so well-established, that when Jetfire was introduced, both the comic and the cartoon (seemingly independently of each other) both felt the need to justify the existence of a good guy plane so they made him a Decepticon who defected to the Autobots.

Even Travis Knight commented on the Plane Vs Cars thing recently.
I know there were toys that didn't follow the pattern the following years (Constructicons, Warpath etc) but we're talking originally. That would be like saying that Beast Wars isn't Mammals Vs Dinosaurs/insects as there are exceptions to this rule.
Actually, I wonder - if Hasbro only had the Diaclone toys to work with (and no Microman), would the original Decepticon line up consist of more different coloured jets?
