You're right; doubtless it'd be an investment that would at least hold its value, but I'm just not feeling it. Will it really? Surely anyone who wants one and can remotely afford it will be getting it now? What resell market is there after unless cheaper? It is being made to order.

There will be people with more money in 2 years than now. Some people will see it in hand and regret not buying it.
Unless a LOT of people are buying them now to make a profit later then I'd be very surprised if they lose much in value.
Or unless WFC 3 is TFTM and Hasbro reveal a smaller cheaper Unicron with fewer panel issues. Which as of the last few hours I'm suddenly thinking might not be that crazy.

i still cant believe that the 1000 retailer ones added are legit, if hasbro want to make this then im pretty certain there might be a few floating around for "convention exclusives" or "none claimed pre orders"

OH MY GODFATHERS.... Bloody hell, I think Andy's a Precog'... I think this makes so much sense! I think this is what's going to happen! I was surprised WFC2 is 'Earth'. But if WFC3 is 'The Movie' then WFC2 being 'Earth' suddenly falls into place! And yeah... a cheaper less sophisticated mass-market Unicron... gosh that'll piss off the 8000 backers, and rightfully so!

I expect it to cross 7000 by morning. It's a dead cert to fund now. In the unlikely event it does not I have struck a secret deal via 'the tunnel' negotiators using new concessions so that I will not have to eat a ham and pineapple pizza. Thus, I am Safe whichever way it goes. I have avoided...No Deal!!!

More likely they bought a set amount from Hasbro, and they sold through them?

Perhaps they only were able to offer it for a set number of days? -Ralph if that was the case you'd have thought they might have mentioned it! Might be a blip. They probably have to put a stock number in the database which has been reached.

I spoke to Andy when they launched and he said they didn’t have a set number or anything, just had to sell what they could. Maybe Hasbro changed their mind on something

Then maybe hasbro only wants domestic sales to bring it across the finish line, and opening it up to kapow for UK was a gimmick meant to jumpstart it again? Seems like the right kind of bullshit.
I have been way too cynical lately and I don't like it.

It's a product. If people buy it and then another product comes out later they prefer its their own fault. Hasbro are just there to make money at the end of the day and owe nobody anything.

Having gone to the effort to open a sales route for Europe it makes no sense otherwise to close it without notice just over 3 days before a crowdfunded project ends. -Ralph

It's a product. If people buy it and then another product comes out later they prefer its their own fault. Hasbro are just there to make money at the end of the day and owe nobody anything. That's the philosophy I take when I dip into 3P product. I do think this is a bit different, though. Unlike "prime wars trilogy," Hasbro seems to have had "WfC" plotted out from start to finish while they were working on the previous "trilogy," with some wiggle room granted. We may end up with a new mold Nightbeat somewhere, or a repaint of Counterpunch that weren't planned kinda wiggle room. But they have all the major players decided. They have certain characters in mind and how many toys they will get and what forms those will look like all decided. They had Siege Cyb Mode Optimus, Siege Galaxy Optimus, and Earthrise Optimus all planned and knew we'd get two nearly identical Optimi (and one very similar) in under a year. They new ER Op was on the horizon while doing Cyb Mode Op. As opposed to CW Ultra Magnus, and Siege Magnus. Those two are far enough apart that Siege wasn't even a glimmer when they designed the CW toy. The CW/Siege UM comparison is absolutely what you say. "Buyer beware for there may or may not be one more to your liking later" feels honest here (though my wording seems ominous, lol). The Siege/Earthrise comparison however feels much more underhanded for all the reasons I stated. I'm not just beating a dead prime here, either. Unicron is absolutely one of those characters that will have been planned this far out. They would have known while working on this Unicron that they would also be planning a smaller and cheaper mass retail Unicron to come towards the end of the line. If they are, that would be really underhanded of them, and it would make the haslab unicron seem even more like a vanity project than it already does. I think the people who shelled out the $600, and bent over backwards to get the big one would have every right to be angry if Hasbro puts out a smaller, cheaper one hot on it's heels. Because like I said, hasbro would have been already planning it.

But I wouldn't agree that they don't own fans anything at all. I think they owe the fandom that -partly- support their franchise a little consideration. And the hypothetical situation CJ describes of Hasbro releasing a cheaper Unicron after trying to get everyone to spend crazy money on dream-toy Unicron would be a bit naughty of them.

If they're crowdfunding they definitely do owe the fans who buy into the product something.
As for the one true Unicron... Prime Gaia Unicron, surely? Actually, could you remove the head of Haslab Unicron and put Gaia on it?

I think they have proven to be both exactly that stupid, and exactly that underhanded and deceitful. This is how I feel about them. They never lie, exactly, but how many people would have bought all those Siege exclusives if they'd known that less than 8 weeks later they'd reveal the switch to Earth modes? They must have known this WELL in advance but they let us continue to believe/suspect/postulate that the Cybertron alt-mode thing would continue into year two and let us invest in year one without that information. As far as a company selling product goes they've done nothing technically wrong, but morally it's starting to look a little disrespectful, manipulative and - dare I say - abusive. Retail Unicron in year 3 would not surprise me one bit.

The only people Hasbro are accountable are to their share holders.
The only reason this is being crowd funded is they probably know it would not sell commercially but there was some profit to be made out of the fan base. If it is made that's over half a million quid extra they have coaxed out of fans.
I have no doubt there are fans working at Hasbro and that they genuinely enjoy what they do on the line but at the end of the day they know fans will by products *now* that they would not with hindsight. And will then continue to buy more product even while compaloning after.
If you want them to care vote with your wallets. Unicron is just showing them what they already knew they could get away with.
*shrugs*
