Jumanji: The Next Level. Martin was right. Still enjoyable Friday night fare though. DEATH TO THE PRICK WHO PLAYED WITH HIS PHONE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUCKING MOVIE.

I had a bit of this when watching Star Wars. Family in the row in front. I can forgive the five year old who pissed about through the entire film because he didn't want to be there, not really his fault (although standing on his seat was a bit much), but his father sat through the whole film messing with his phone and totally ignoring the problem. Worse than that, the *father* then started annoying his older son, who was perfectly well behaved and enjoying the film.
Couple that with the water problem which meant no one could go to the toilet and I'm wondering why I bother at all with cinemas these days. I think the last three times I've been now have been affected by annoying children too young to be there anyway.

We had that problem with 'Cats'. Whole row opposite me was full of kids too young to be there so were acting up. Their adults spent most of the time playing with their phones.
Phone use is my biggest problem with cinemas. It's so ignorant towards other people. The screens are so bright they draw my eyes to them and distract from the film. I do not understand why people pay to see a film but fuck about on their phones during it.
Arthouse theatres still have ushers so that kind of shit never flies there.

My local Arts Centre does show films, second run type stuff after they've been on at the main cinemas. I'd be happy with that, but they're almost always afternoon screenings so it tends to be OAPs only.

One of my New Year resolutions is to patronise the centre far more than I do, so hopefully it'll still be around when I get that far.

1. Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl (German adaptation of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit)
Very good adaptation of the book! I look forward to a DVD release with English subtitles to enjoy it more fully, but I just about kept up with the German

2: Airplane! Good to see on a big screen. Noticed gags I had missed when seeing it on the telly. And don't call me Shirley!

1917: well made and all but I found it curiously unengaging and at times quite boring. Took me a while to figure out why: it's like watching someone else play a video game. It looks and feels exactly like that.
There is also a big cheat with the 'in real time' concept that annoyed me and the joins in the 'single shot' concept are staggeringly obvious. Probably would not have noticed these as much if I had felt emotionally engaged, but I wasn't as watching other people play video games is dull as fuck.

Kicked off the year today with The Personal History of David Copperfield. Decent enough. Peter Capaldi is tops as Mr Micawber.

Jojo Rabbit: very good. Misleading trailer makes it look OTT 'wacky' but it really isn't at all. Good drama.

It is one of those cases where the trailer advertises a completely different film than the one which actually exists. I thought it looked awful in the trailer and only saw it because I had enjoyed two of the director's previous films!
It's a serious and clever drama which uses comedic elements to make certain points rather than what the trailer suggests which is OTT stupidity.

interesting the trailer made it looks very very wacky and bonkers Despite Ralphs response I suspect the wacky version is the easier sell in a 30 second trailer, but the trailer pretty much uses up all the wacky. Thankfully the rest of the film is in no way disappointing as a result. Its still very funny. Sam Rockwell and Alfie Allen in particular.

Birds of Prey: Not entirely my cup of tea or successful and tries to hard to ape the Suicide Squad style. I'm also not convinced it needed to be tooled for an R rating: there's a cleverer film hiding in there. Pretty watchable though and the fight choreography is pretty good. It's a bit of a mess but it's a much better mess than Suicide Squad was.

I can't remember what Ive seen so far this year.
But I noticed I forgot to add JoJo Rabit to last years list which brings me to a nice even 40 films for last year.
Er this year. Jumanji 3. Might have been last year, might have been this year. It was probably week 53 or week 1.
Jumanji 3. Mixed things up just enough to stop it getting boring.
1917 - I really liked it but I get Ralphs video game thing. Some of the cuts were bad but I assume the other 99% passed me by completely so cant complain about the occasional obvious one. I was engrossed, but there were moments when it became more about technical achievment than emotional connection.
Birds of Prey - I did not expect to like it nearly a much as I did. My favourite DCEU (or whatever) movie? Maybe, I really enjoyed Shazam too. More like the film Suicide Squad tried to sell itself as after seeing Guardians of the Galaxy. But better. Much much better.
Its a strange world where DC most developed big screen character is Harley Quinn.

Its better than Joker, but doesnt use its rating a swell.
