Yeah. Bland. Not a very well thought out story. James Marsden did a fun human/animated creature movie many years ago called Hop that was pretty good for what it was; this was pretty much a rework of the same plot but had none of the charm or humour.

It made me think that the first design for Sonic fit that film better than the more game accurate one they used instead after the outcry. Looked more orphaned alien. Which goes to show how misjudged the plot was. When you think Sonic you don't think ET.

Saw it earlier in a full cinema. In its defence all the kids in the room seemed to love it.
I didnt mind it. It passed a couple of hours before the gig i was going to.

The Fast & Furious franchise obviously feels out of its comfort zone making good films and so has brought back Vin Diesel and the other joy-killers. I don't think Agent Burns from Bumblebee is up to the job of saving it in the absence of Johnson & Statham. Martin

Jumanji 3. Might have been last year, might have been this year. It was probably week 53 or week 1. Jumanji 3. 1917 Birds of Prey Sonic Cinema is back. Im not 100% comfortable if honest. Even with only 4 people in the screening. Anyway Unhinged - Russel Crowe is terrifying. The film is very silly. But I expected that there was no way to maintain the concept for a full film without people making very silly choices. Kept me entertained and to repeat myself. Crowe is TERRIFYING. Thanks I suppose to being just a normal guy hes the scariest screen villian Ive seen for quite a while. A better real world Joker than Joker in some ways.

'Inception' on Superscreen showing at lunchtime? Sold. Will look at work diary tomorrow and find out what afternoon I have free of meetings next week.
Edit: Correction: Will probably go on Sunday.

1. Inception 10th Anniversary 2. The Personal History of David Copperfield
Lunchtime screening. About six of us watching in an auditorium capable of seating about 400. Social distancing not an issue.
A few adverts, then a trailer for Christopher Nolan's new film 'Tenet', which opens on the 26th, then a short documentary about 'Tenet', then a short documentary about 'Inception', then 'Inception' itself, which has aged so well it feels like it could have been made today. I love a film that relies on the viewer to pay attention to the action in order to understand what's going on and fill in the things not told through dialogue. Spotted a lot of background touches that I don't notice when I watch this film on the small screen.
Coming out of lockdown feels a bit like coming out of being trapped in a dream world that's a lot smaller than the real world existing in my memory. For more than four months I was in a world with no cinemas, cafes, open plan offices or accessible locations beyond a 2-mile radius of my house, now I'm feeling like I'm waking up and in a world that's a lot closer to the one I remember being in six months ago, but with some key differences. Weird.
Someone's been messing with the Matrix's programming.
Oh no, sorry, wrong film.

Jumanji 3. 1917 Birds of Prey Sonic Unhinged Flash Gordon - Been putting it off for weeks but couldnt miss out seeing it on the big screen. But I nearly did. Arrived late and the guy had to check if they had turned it off as there was no one in there. Thankfully they hadnt but I'd missed about 10-15 minutes. That was fine but a few minutes later the guy came back in and asked if I would like them to restart it. Obviously I said yes please. So cinema to myself. Whole film. Yay! BTTF ended its run on Sunday, missed it. Boo.

1. Inception 10th Anniversary 2. Tenet3. The Personal History of David Copperfield TEMPORAL PINCER MOVEMENT. Well, that's given me a lot to try to work out in my head. It'll take another viewing (probably on Blu-ray) to make complete (?) sense of it all. But it's definitely something new in time-travel cinema, and something I've never seen attempted visually before, and that's very welcome. Edit: New Mutants booked. Martin

1. Inception 10th Anniversary 2. The New Mutants3. Tenet 4. The Personal History of David Copperfield It exists! Very much one for fans of the comics. I can see how it got bad reviews from anyone expecting it to be either X-Men: The Next, Next Generation or the supernatural horror/slasher movie suggested by the trailers. It's neither. It's an actual New Mutants movie. Four very strong lead female performances, two forgettable males to fill out the cast, which makes a nice change of pace. And one fist-pumping 'Yes!' moment that I won't even put in spoiler tags, which I'm thankful they kept from spoiling in any of the trailers and clips I saw in advance. Edit 1: But now that I go looking for it, I see that it was widely trailed in the last few weeks and I just wasn't watching the right clips. Luckily. Edit 2: The IGN review on Youtube pretty much nails it. Martin

1. Inception 10th Anniversary 2. Bill and Ted Face the Music3. The New Mutants 4. Tenet 5. The Personal History of David Copperfield Sorry, Tenet, you only held the crown for 'Best Post-Lockdown Time-Travel Movie' for one month. When a film begins with dialogue such as "Ted and I have known Missy in different capacities for many decades. First, she was our babysitter when we were ten." "Then we both invited her to the prom when she was a senior and we were freshmen." "Yeah. Two years later, she married my dad and Missy became Mom." "After divorcing Bill’s dad, she married my dad and became my mom." "Yeah. And now she’s marrying Ted’s little brother, Officer Deacon Logan." "This happy event would seem to make Deacon his own father-in-law, and Ted his own uncle." "Not to mention making my dad his own son." and they haven't even got to the time-travel yet, you know it's going to be good. Martin

Jumanji 3. 1917 Birds of Prey Sonic Unhinged Flash Gordon Bill and Ted Face the Music - I was a little worried, after a good start it felt like it was struggling to work out where it was going for a while, but that was followed by a barnstorming second half. Oddly that was my feelings watching Excellent Adventures at cinema last year. Spoiler Initially it felt like they had gone too young recasting the Princess' but realised that while they would be younger than all the previous actresses and younger than Reeves and Winters they were about the correct age for the characters. Both actresses are great to so not an actual complaint.
I feel like they were probably intended to have a bigger role that has largely been cut. But I suspect it would have been a bit to similar to Bill and Teds.
Billie and Thea initially felt too broad and as described elsewhere, as if they had been taken out of an SNL sketch. Maybe its their age, if the film had been made 5-10 years ago and the characters were late teens it might have been less jarring. But they came in to their own and by the end I was enjoying them, I'd happily watch a spin off if that was ever the intent.
Dennis was great.

Yes indeed, Dennis cracked me up every time he did or said anything.
Yes, the daughters grew on me and were eminently likeable, so would be happy to see them again in Billie and Thea's Most Triumphant Travels. Or whatever they might call it.
As for the wives... timey-wimey, immigrants from Middle Ages age more slowly, whatever dudes.

Nothing terrible, but I still think better not to know the amount of information it reveals. But yes that review sums it up pretty well. Probably worthy of more praise than its given, but factually the review is fair.

Jumanji 3. 1917 Birds of Prey Sonic Unhinged Flash Gordon Bill and Ted Face the Music New Mutants - Not sure where it comes in production order, but a far far better final instalment than the last X-Men film. Not that it is perfect. The film chooses to make some references to Buffy, I guess the comparison is fair, except the first half of the film is far more comparable with Sky Ones "UK Buffy" Hex, which for those of you lucky enough not to have seen, was set at a boarding school with a load of witchcraft and demons, so yeah Buffyish, but non of the characters were particularly likable and the whole thing felt a bit grim. New Mutants starts out very similarly. For a while I was worried they were trying to make a Fan4stic type film, but thankfully as far as it does it does it well and the whole film steadily improves, by the end I'd happily have watched a follow up. Spoiler Spoiler A little sad not to see a final Stan Lee cameo, though again I have no idea when it was actually filmed so dont know if that was even an option.
Also no X-men cameo, bit of a surprise. The ending seemed perfectly set up for one. Wonder if there was one but removed as the Disney purchase killed the series.

One last spoiler about the ending Spoiler I was thinking mostly of X-Men cameo but an X-Force one would have worked too.
This one did New Mutants pretty well from my very limited reading of the comics, and the others films have done student X-Men to death. So yeah jumping straight to X-Force, would probably have been better.

Tenet has been ordered as something to watch at Christmas. If it is crap, I blame Martin.
Of course, I would rather have seen it in the cinema, especially in Imax, but it wasn't to be.
New Mutants due January 4th if pennies allow. Hopefully the last Fox X-men film isn't a duffer (though strictly speaking, this was made before Dark Phoenix).
