I just like a full game in a box. Buying all sorts of extras to play something is just too Inside Baseball for me.
I have enough expensive hobbies as it is, anyway!

Yeah, that's what the Shadespire version was supposed to overcome - it is an all in one game with figures and a board. But then it also has a lot of expansions.
I noticed Kapow are selling the Heroquest game for half price at the moment. I was tempted for a minute and then decided it'd be too much hassle.

I didn't enjoy Fantasy as much, probably because my chosen army was rather limited - Chaos Dwarfs. Though i did love them.
I remember having fun destroying a friend's Brettonian Army when his general and knights charged some Hobgoblin Wolf Riders and I had my bolt thrower shoot into my own ranks, killed his general and routed them. He moaned non stop that I shouldn't be allowed to fire into my own troops.

Yeah, but it's no Crossbows and Catapults. Good news! Restoration Games just announced they're bringing it back! I've always been put off by the likes of Warhammer, D&D etc as it seems like such a huge investment of money buying loads of bits just to play it. I fear the investment in D&D is more time than money. You don't need minis to play, nor even a huge in depth knowledge of the rules if the DM is any good. But without a competent DM the session will fail miserably.

Yeah, but it's no Crossbows and Catapults. Good news! Restoration Games just announced they're bringing it back! That I could go for if it's a good set. I am, after all, the man who made foam inserts for his Grand Battleset a while ago to stop it rattling in the box. This is important stuff!

Campaign just went live...
Weapons not elastic band powered. How are we meant to over power them?
(Mods? Crossbows and Catapults discussion to move into general tabletop gaming thread?)

I'm going to have to give this some thought. I think this has to be an all in thing doesn't it. No point going for the thirty dollar entry level, the postage and vat more than doubles that.

I could be completely wrong: it's just how it comes across to an Outsider. -Ralph It's basically exactly the same as collecting Transformers but they also double as game pieces.

As Fate wills it, so it is done. Horus Heresy Starter box is ordered, along with the Loyalist armylist book. These shall form the core of a force for both 30K and 40K rules-sets.
One the one hand, a detachment from the 3rd Company, 29th Order, First Legion "The Dark Angels", and on the other a force primarily drawn from 3rd Company, The Storm Angels Chapter (a Dark Angel's Successor Chapter).
Now then, the next question is where do I go in expanding the force out from there - more Terminators (some Tartaros would be quite nice), some Transport (Land Raider Proteus can be used in both eras equally, and could allow me to mechanise a fair chunk of the force...

I'll stick to Connect 4.

I could see you enjoying it, given your competitive nature.

Got the beginnings of a fairly decent army between the leviathan set and what I had from the partworks and a few random purchases
1 terminator captain, 1 librarian in terminator armour, 1 librarian in phobos armour, 1 primaris captain, 1 apothecary biologis, 1 primaris lieutenant, 5 terminators, 5 sternguard veterans, 10 man infernus squad, ballistus dreadnought, 3 Prmaris aggressors, 3 bladeguard veterans, 12 assualt intercessors, Cypher and 5 Dark Angel veterans.
There's a chaos marine sorceror and what looks like 5 chaos terminators kicking around as well.
And then there is the contents of the Horus Heresy boxed set to go...

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a third party app to manage the DM side of things for Heroquest so you could play it solo or just co-op. Many games like Decent third edition and mansions of madness have done this with official apps.
Gloomhaven / Jaws of the Lion / Frosthaven does away with the need for even that by just having enemies follow a move/attack algorithm. But the player gameplay is much more in depth than Heroquest's roll and move (has this been updated in the new version?)

The smaller set will be released retail and likely cheaper.
Don't give in to their crowdfunding marketing. If the extras were worthwhile and required for a fun game, they'd be included in the base set unless the publisher was looking to exploit fomo. If the extras aren't worthwhile, then why are they being produced in the first place? Either way, it's a reason not to back for the higher level pledges.
I hate what boardgame crowdfunding has become.

I didn't do it in the end. I have my original Grand Battle set, I'll stick with that. It'd have been about £140 for the big set with the included extras. What I would have done, had I read the rewards properly, was do the $10 bottom tier that gives you access to the pledge manager. That would mean being able to upgrade to the Fortress set any time in the next year and still get all the bonus rewards. Kinda kicking myself for not looking at that properly now, a tenner put aside a month for the next year would have covered that - that I would have done. But hey ho. It's a box I don't have to find space for.

Finally started painting up my army - keeping to only a small number in progress at any one time - currently have 5 terminators, 5 Fallen and Cypher in mid flight. Should get them tabletop ready by Monday all going well.

Oh my progress has been slow and painful, a combination of being as rusty as fuck and miniatures being so much more detailed now.
Also, I remember the days it would only take ten minutes or so to glue up a squad...those definitely were the days, 3 plus hours to do 15 terminators and a contemptor Dreadnought.

I used to do all of my undercoating (and maybe some base painting, it's been a while) while the bits were still on the sprue, then tidy it up when the model was assembled. No idea if it was quicker or easier, it just made sense to my addled head at the time.

Why are game pieces not coloured? It's a huge barrier for entry for look like me. Screwball Scramble doesn't need painting before it works.
Genuine question!

I agree with Ralph. The need to paint figures ruled me out of ever being interested in gaming of this kind. When you collect cards to play in card games, you don't have to colour in the cards for yourself. Why do you have to with miniatures?

You don't HAVE to, although, I admit it can feel like that sometimes. I have no intention of painting these Hero Quest minis for example.
But the painting is a big part of it for a lot of people. It makes them personal, and allows them to be creative. Painting is just a fun extra.
Wonder if pre-painted miniatures have ever been officially tried...?
