They sprayed you with water? This is an immersive experience is it? Go to the cinema for a shower and blow dry?
Where did it all go wrong...

Its a proper theme park simulator ride, but 90 minutes long instead of 3.
I imagined 4DX would be ..... subtler?
It is not.

I only booked 4DX once, by accident, a few years ago. Never again.
It's just one out of Cardiff Cineworld's 15 screens, so easily avoidable if I pay better attention when booking.
What I do like is the recliner seats they have in Leicester Square. I wish CC had those. So I make do with booking seats that have bars in front of them to put feet up on.

Dune Part One - about as perfect as a space fantasy epic can be which you aren't allowed to put any humour or fun in. Worth seeing once.

Martin The problem right now is that they just invested big time adding it to my cinema. They are going to push it on all suitable films at the expense of standard showing or there fake Imax screen (which I do want to try as its new too). The only non 4dx venom 2 showings were 9.20pm. And this week the only non 4DX Dune ones are 7pm. Never been a big fan of late or even evening screenings as they are busier. Combined with a pandemic and working nights so my sleep pattern really doesnt suit late showings and its going to be a problem.

1. In the Heights 2. The Suicide Squad 3. Black Widow 4. Free Guy 5. Last Night in Soho 6. The Alpinist 7. Eternals (highly entertaining nonsense) 8. No Time to Die 9. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 10. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions 11. Freaky 12. Dune Part One 13. Venom: Let There Be Carnage 14. Copshop 15. Reminiscence 16. Snake Eyes: G.I. Eternals was a mess of a film, but it was my kind of mess. Completely ludicrous concept, and sagged a bit in the middle, but came back with some interesting character twists in the final act.
The two end credit sequences put big silly grins on my face.

1. In the Heights 2. Fast and Furious 9 3. Black Widow - Nice low stakes fun movie. Widows family are fun. Does feel like its got lost in the shuffle with all the Disney+ shows hogging the headlines. 4. Jungle Cruise - A film that is definitely set in the Pirates universe. The inevitable Disneyland Cinematic Universe in one step closer. But that shouldnt put you off seeing it. 5. The Suicide Squad - Its a Gunn film so I expected it to be good, but this was mostly better than that. And even better it means he can now focus on The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special. Which I have to accept can neve rlive up to my expectations. 6. Free Guys - Im having a very good year of films. I suppose that makes sense as I really have to want to see something to go to a cinema to see it at the mo. Still Free Guy is fighting it out with Jungle Cruise for biggest surprise. Goes beyond the silly film shown in the trailers and gets a bit more out of the concept. *Shang-Chi : Loved it. * Venom 2 : Didn't hate it. I think its a better film than the first but in trying to recapture the madness that made the first one fun this one felt a bit forced at times. * Eternals : what Martin said. * The Addams Family 2: The Addams Family Goes Sci-fi. Not as good as the first one, but then the first one was very, very good. The biggest issue with the sequel is that the family seems to have started viewing itself as the odd ones rather than everyone else. At the same time they (Gomez especially) are acting out of character and behaving like normal people. Spoiler There is a suggestion (more than a suggestion really) that Cousin It is in fact Snoop Dog.

Shang-Chi and Snake Eyes both out on shiny disc in HMV today. Neither is in my top 5 films of the year, so I will pass. I saw Shang-Chi twice in the cinema, which is enough for one year. I only saw Snake Eyes once, and toyed with the idea of buying it, until I remembered the unconvincing giant CG snake monsters and though, "Nah, you're all right." New Ghostbusters hits the cinema this week. Will watch the original in preparation for it. (As if I didn't know it by heart.) Martin

Shangi Chi and The Suicide Squad acquired on bluray. No surprise with Shang chi. Ive got all the films and most of Shield and Agent Carter.
The Suicide Squad is my first DC purchase since......... a cheap copy of the Nolan trilogy I think.

1. In the Heights 2. Fast and Furious 9 3. Black Widow 4. Jungle Cruise seeing it. 5. The Suicide Squad 6. Free Guys *Shang-Chi
* Venom 2
* Rons Gone Wrong : completely forgot Id seen this.... which I guess sums up my feeling about it. There was a film a few years back that was produced in China and while quite good did feel like Chinese propaganda material. Ron spends quite a lot of its run time like a propaganda piece for Apple (or well any major tech company). Then suddenly it isn't and then it mostly is again. Theres some good messages about social media in there, but mostly I was left feeling a bit off put.
* Eternals
* The Addams Family 2:
* No Time to Die: Okay. But I think I like my Bonds less serious and less personal. Bring back the Brosnan era.
I am feeling a bit bummed that the Craig era is over, but only because Casino Royal marked the start of my brief career in vfx and is also the last franchise I worked on to end.

Double bill last Thursday, couple of anime classics. Good to see on the big screen. And being niche films, not busy cinema, either!

Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train 26. Monster Hunter So... Ghostbusters Afterlife. OK, so it's a love letter to the original Ghostbusters. It's respectful, even reverential, to the 1984 movie, very faithful to the story it told, and its look. The special effects match, almost 40 years apart.
The problem is, it's so much about keeping the original's legacy going that fans of the original are able to predict everything that happens, so for everyone in the audience who gets the nostalgia, there is zero suspense. If you've seen the original, nothing in this film is scary. The only people who may find scares or suspense in this film are people who haven't seen the original. And all the nostalgia will be wasted on them. So who is the audience for this film?
It's not funny either.
It's not awful. The acting is decent, the characters are likeable enough, it has the wasn't-the-first-Ghostbusters-amazing element, but it's neither funny nor scary. Which is a shame. Martin

Martin's recommendation for Free Guy is spot on - very enjoyable film. Ryan Reynolds seems to be everywhere at the moment, but this one really worked. I will seek out a Blu-Ray when it reaches sale price. I love The Truman Show and I realised very quickly that this is really this generation's version of that.

Don't have a good day... Ryan Reynolds seems to be everywhere at the moment Yeah. And Red Notice looks awful from the trailer and clips I've seen, but I'll probably give it a go (if it gets a proper cinema release). Which reminds me, did you notice the Dwayne Johnson (and Hugh Jackman) voice cameos in Free Guy? Martin

Red Notice is... not good. It passes the time, but ... {Spoiler}Its incredibly obvious from early on that either theres going to be a twist (that itself will be underwhelming and barely impact the plot in the end) or the script is going to be terribly one dimensional and really go nowhere or do anything. Its a perfect example of a film soley relying on the cast being watchable.

Spending a Friday afternoon in the cinema with two bottles of Corona, a hot dog and five other audience members, watching some escapist horror? Nah! It was very different from the previous series, which I also enjoyed. Creepiness rather than spectacle. Solid acting, and a decent script. My main complaint is that the suspense was spoiled by it being too predictable who would live and die. Martin
