1. In the Heights 2. The Suicide Squad 3. Spider-Man: No Way Home 4. Black Widow 5. Free Guy 6. Last Night in Soho 7. The Alpinist 8. Eternals 9. No Time to Die 10. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 11. The Matrix: Resurrections (much better than I expected after The Times gave it a 1-star review) 12. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions 13. Freaky 14. West Side Story 15. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City 16. Ghostbusters Afterlife 17. Dune Part One 18. Venom: Let There Be Carnage 19. Copshop 20. Reminiscence 21. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins 22. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard 23. Space Jam: A New Legacy 24. Malignant 25. Jungle Cruise 26. Mortal Kombat 27. Godzilla vs Kong 28. A Quiet Place Part 2 29. The Matrix series gets a slightly better ending. Though that isn't asking much.

'The King's Man' is superb. Great to see Ralph Fiennes ('M' in 'Spectre' and 'No Time to Die') taking on a new action hero lead role just as Daniel Craig, several years his junior, is considered too old to go on being James Bond. Respect.
A fine film on which to end 2021.
Looking back on the year, I've seen more films in the cinema this year than in any previous year, due to Covid hampering so many other activities, and it being a surefire way to totally disengage and escape from the crapness of the real world for a few hours. I was worried some cinemas and studios might not survive the pandemic after the closures of 2020, but so far they seem to have bounced back OK.
There are several films this year - the half dozen at the bottom of my league table - that I'd have done better to miss, but for the most part I've enjoyed what 2021 had to offer. (Some of them are of course films that were planned to be released in 2020.) Five MCU films in one year (counting 'Venom 2'), one of them being the best Marvel movie since 'Endgame' and the best Spider-Man film to date. And coming out of nowehere to be better than any of them, the best DC movie since the Dark Knight trilogy, in 'The Suicide Squad'. A few decent musicals (not my favourite genre), one of them, 'In the Heights', being exceptionally good. Some decent horror movies (also not my favourite genre), easily the best being 'Last Night in Soho'. A superb documentary in 'The Alpinist'. Some significant conclusions to franchises, in 'No Time to Die' and 'The Matrix: Resurrections'.
And a surprise film that is possibly even more rewatchable than 'The Suicide Squad', namely the joyous 'Free Guy'.
Yeah, if every year could offer what 2021 offered, big screen entertainment will be in good shape going forward.

Look like Spider-man will be my last film of the year, but hey at least I ended on a good one.
1. Spider-man 2. Black widow 3. Free Guy 4. The Suicide Squad 5. In the Heights 6. Shang Chi 7. The Eternals 8. No Time to Die 9. Fast and Furious 9 10. Jungle Cruise 11. Venom 2 12. Rons Gone Wrong 13. The Addams Family 2
A bit unfortunate that the bottom two are animated.
Not a great total but as cineworld was closed for a large chunk of the year and my unlimited card nearly halved in price when it reopened its hardly a disaster. Especially as some of that saving has gone to paying for Disney+ which provided about 40 episodes of quality MCU entertainment this year. Along with unexpected bonuses like The Mightly Ducks and Bad Batch (or were they last year?), Only Murders in the Building and Amphibia.
For one reason or another I missed around a half dozen films

Eternals, Dune and Resident Evil all available on disc this week.
None of them are great. Goodness knows why Dune is getting Oscar nominations. I suppose because it's ooohhh 'serious' (i.e. joyless) science-fiction.

Possibly slim pickings? I watched the Cucumber Patch one the award nominators are raving about at the weekend. It just left me thinking, really?

I've paid the awards no attention this year. They'be all become so far removed from what I enjoy watching that they are now meaningless.
I mean they were always meaningless, but at one time a film I hadnt seen being oscar nominated might have given me a little push to see it.

Couldn't stand the first Kingsman film, so will give this a miss.

I didn't rate that one much either, but this is completely different in tone. It's doing itself a disservice by using the name really; it's a prequel to the Colin Firth ones set in 1913. Reasonable action film, lacking in meaningful female characters, but gives Ralph Fiennes a chance to show what M might have been like in his glory days.

Weather terrible, so re-watched Kingsman 1 and 2 this afternoon while catching up with work e-mails. I wasn't a fan of either when they first came out, due to the excessive violence, but they've grown on me over the years (maybe Game of Thrones has numbed me to some of that sort of stuff), so I appreciate them now for their witty scripts.
But yes, The King's Man was different in tone, more mature and serious. Well, it's World War One, which really happened, and you can't really make light of that!
I look forward to watching it for a second time if I can get hold of it in HMV tomorrow.

GI JOE ORIGINS: SNAKE EYES. Disappointing. Dull, boring, lifeless, overlong. No joy to be had at all. -Ralph

GI JOE ORIGINS: SNAKE EYES. Disappointing. Agreed. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is out on disc this week, if anyone's interested. It too is not a good film. But everyone will have to see it at some point, because Ghostbusters. Martin

The Matrix: Resurrections is out on disc next week. Worth a watch. Not the worst film in the series.
