Moved previous posts to tmukhub.proboards.com/thread/11066/post-lockdown-cinema1. Mortal KombatTop line of the movie: "I have risen from Hell to kill you!" Other top lines: Anything Kano says. I was hoping one of my local cinemas would show WW84 when it reopened, but none of them appear to have it listed. I'll give it a few weeks before falling back on seeing it first on the small screen. 1. Mortal Kombat 2. Godzilla vs KongI am still processing my thoughts on Mortal Kombat. My thoughts on GvK have appeared in my head fully formed. a) I rarely say this about a film, but they should have shaved off 20 minutes by completely cutting out the pointless B-plot. It was even more pointless than the computer hackers' B-plot in the first live-action Transformers. Correction: IT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME B-PLOT.
b) I really should have re-watched the other films in the series before seeing this, as my memories of them are dim.
c) It's like Batman vs Superman, only with more intelligent and charismatic title characters, yay! (But no Wonder Woman, boo.)
d) I did wonder how they would make it a fair match. Now I know. Give Kong a ***** ***.
e) Fans of one of the title characters will be disappointed that the other one gets ten times as much screen time. But it wouldn't have worked trying to give them equal time on screen.
f) There were some really good 'Yes!' moments.
g) Mortal Kombat (2021) probably wouldn't suffer much by being watched first on a small screen. In fact, certain poor fully CG characters would be positively improved by it. Watching GvK, I kept wishing I was watching it on Superscreen. They weren't showing ads and trailers on Tuesday. They are now. Martin

1. Mortal Kombat 2. Godzilla vs Kong 3. A Quiet Place Part 2 (IMAX)
I had not seen Part 1, but that did not matter as it was all clear what was going on. It’s probably the best new film I’ve seen this year, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it as I don’t really like films of non-stop tension. I’m in no hurry to see another one like this.
Lovely to see a slew of new trailers in IMAX. In the Heights, Top Gun: Maverick, and one which began with Ryan Reynolds driving a fast car, which I was worried was FF9 since he was in Hobbs and Shaw, but thankfully it wasn’t. It was something called The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, which looks quite entertaining. The FF9 trailer came on afterwards, and looked awful, like anything starring Vin Diesel not playing a tree. I’ll go see the other three films trailed, though.

Can't wait for FF9. I hope it is still on in August. That and Black Widow I hope to see as a double bill that month if they are in the local fleapit then. I doubt Godzilla Vs Kong will still be on then.

1. Mortal Kombat 2. Godzilla vs Kong 3. A Quiet Place Part 2 4. Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train
Er, um, yes. This is perhaps one that would have benefited from prior knowledge of the franchise. Crazy stuff!
Completely different set of trailers, yay. Including Venom, MCU and Monster Hunter.

1. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard 2. Mortal Kombat 3. Godzilla vs Kong 4. A Quiet Place Part 2 5. Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train
Just what I was in the mood for. I laughed aloud and often.
This was the first film of 2021 that I have enjoyed watching as much as I did the three from the previous unlocking (Tenet, Bill and Ted, New Mutants).

1. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard 2. Mortal Kombat 3. Godzilla vs Kong 4. A Quiet Place Part 2 5. Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train 6. Monster Hunter
Possibly the stupidest film I have ever seen in the cinema.
It's like... the first half was trying to be a second-rate hybrid of Stargate and Alien and Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim. But you could at least sort of see what it was trying to do. Then it's as if the film-maker lost a bet with his children and had to do whatever they told him to do for the next half hour. And all his children wanted different things. And then they realised they'd run out of time and/or money, and rolled the end credits, hoping the audience wouldn't notice they film was incomplete.
Unfortunately I was neither tired nor drunk when I saw it. So I noticed.
If you like talking about how bad films can be, I thoroughly recommend seeing this one, otherwise you just won't know.
It's like watching a film on the telly, getting bored half-way through and starting to channel-hop. And then falling asleep having seen half of one film, bits of several others, and the ending to none of them.

1. In the Heights 2. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard 3. Mortal Kombat 4. Godzilla vs Kong 5. A Quiet Place Part 2 6. Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train 7. Monster Hunter
At last, the first truly excellent film of 2021.
I've watched a lot of rubbish in the last month, partly because I had some free cinema vouchers for Vue Cardiff to use up (three films), partly because I was in a hotel close to Leicester Square for a few days (three films), and partly because I'm still smarting from when cinema got snatched away after the first reopening. In the Heights is the first film I've seen this year in my regular cinema (Cardiff Cineworld), and damn it looked good on SuperScreen.

1. In the Heights - My love of Hamilton meant I had to break lockdown to see this. Not disappointed. Perfect feel good summer film. Non of the songs latched on to my brain the way most of Hamilton did, but I could see that changing with a few rewatches.
2. Fast and Furious 9 - Also required breaking cover. Also not disappointing. Maybe not quite a perfect film, but another great one for the big screen. I suspect Gibson has been rewarded with more screen time for being so vocally team Diesel during Diesel vs Johnson. Im okay with this.
I'm honestly not sure where they go for the last two films. Time travel?

Like 'A Quiet Place Part 2', 'Escape Room: ToC' was a sequel to a film I haven't seen. Unlike 'A Quiet Place Part 2', it made me want to see the first film.

If you only see one comic book-based movie in the cinema this summer, see The Suicide Squad.
If you only see two, see The Suicide Squad and Black Widow.
If you see three, see The Suicide Squad again.
If you see four, and you're a big G.I. Joe / Action Force fan, you may want to give Snake Eyes a look. Or you could wait and see it on the small screen.

Thoughts on Snake Eyes. Plus points:
It misled me several times with regard to Snake Eyes' character, loyalties and intentions. I like films that misdirect the audience or run counter to expectations as to who is actually the hero.
The name check of Scarlett's commanding officer was a nice touch.
Minus points:
The film should be called Storm Shadow: Cobra Origins! It provides a more complete origin story for Storm Shadow than it does for Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes still has his face and voice at the end of the movie. It needs a sequel to explain how he becomes the silent guy who doesn't show his face.
Scarlett and the Baroness have disappointingly little screen time. Annoying because Samara Weaving was great in Bill & Ted, but was largely wasted here. Also annoying because the Baroness's part could have gone to another Cobra operative, thereby averting the main continuity clash with The Rise of Cobra (namely Scarlett knowing the Baroness before she knows Snake Eyes).
And whoever thought a film called Snake Eyes needed unconvincing giant telepathic snakes as a major plot point... no. Just, no.
The film isn't as much fun as its trailer suggests, but it's OK. It lacks on the super-ninja front. The Hard Master is pretty cool, though. Martin

I love The Rise of Cobra, and I love the unbutchered version of Retaliation. They are both a lot of fun. This one is just... okay.
For GI Joe true fans... at least it doesn't have Transformers in it.

1. In the Heights 2. The Suicide Squad 3. Black Widow 4. Free Guy 5. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions 6. Freaky 7. Reminiscence (solid little sci-fi crime noir with Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson in roles that would once have gone to Bogart and Bacall) 8. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins 9. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard 10. Mortal Kombat 11. Godzilla vs Kong 12. A Quiet Place Part 2 13. Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train 14. Monster Hunter

1. In the Heights 2. Fast and Furious 9
3. Black Widow - Nice low stakes fun movie. Widows family are fun. Does feel like its got lost in the shuffle with all the Disney+ shows hogging the headlines.
4. Jungle Cruise - A film that is definitely set in the Pirates universe. The inevitable Disneyland Cinematic Universe in one step closer. But that shouldnt put you off seeing it.
5. The Suicide Squad - Its a Gunn film so I expected it to be good, but this was mostly better than that. And even better it means he can now focus on The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special. Which I have to accept can neve rlive up to my expectations.
6. Free Guys - Im having a very good year of films. I suppose that makes sense as I really have to want to see something to go to a cinema to see it at the mo. Still Free Guy is fighting it out with Jungle Cruise for biggest surprise. Goes beyond the silly film shown in the trailers and gets a bit more out of the concept.

Really not sure if I even saw a trailer for Jungle Cruise and as much as I love Disney its the only film Ive seen this year that I had no plans to, but right place right time.
If you like The Mummy or similar films I'd say Jungle Cruise is worth a go.
