Well Cardiff Cineworld is currently advertising two screenings for this weekend. Something called "Andre Rieu 2020 Maastricht Concert: Happy Together", 3pm Saturday and 3pm Sunday.

I'm busy this weekend anyway.
Otherwise, I might have been tempted by anything they put on, just in case it was my one and only chance to go to the cinema before another five-month drought.

I have, courtesy of my Mother's addiction, seen many Andre Rieu performances. I repeat: Just Say No!!!

My local cinema is open, but it's an Odeon and one of the most expensive in the UK and I do my best to not give them any money. Not really up for a trip on public transport to Edinburgh/Glasgow to watch a film.

One of my passions is the cinema and I do miss it. The one nearest me remains closed but I am surprised to admit I don't feel like rushing back even when it is open so I may cancel my Cineworld card when I am notified of being charged again.

In my experience so far, it's the loud noisy arseholes that don't give a fuck about social distancing.

I have no intention of going to the cinema in current circumstances, and they closed down my favourite local in December anyway, but a friend of my wife's has been going and saying it's really nice and quiet.

I always favour early performances that begin before or around midday, when there tend to only be a handful of people in a massive auditorium. As long as they re-start those screenings and not just peak-time ones, and the numbers of people going at that time of day don't increase beyond what they were pre-lockdown, then social distancing won't an issue for me. (Plus, if you go to the first screening of the day, you know you're the first person to sit in that seat that day.)

Yes, indeed. When I go back I don't care what the current daily figures are I will only go mid morning or afternoon when it is quiet. If there are any loud twats/folk not keeping their distance I will be out the door like a shot. But I am not ready to do that yet.
No listings for local Cineworld until 12th of September anyway.

Love going but it will be a long time before I do again. Social distancing is shot anywhere in public around here. Further enhanced by the invincibility apparently bestowed by wearing a mask incorrectly.

I have seen one gent on a bus who believes that a mask can bestow its powers when worn around the neck.

I get the impression it's shot everywhere. The masks thing has given people a sense of security, whether false or not, and it's hard now to ignore the upturn in the seven day average for new cases. That was inevitable given all the relaxations, but it doesn't seem the track and trace system is strong enough to counter it. A couple of weeks ago I was really beginning to think we were winning, but I'm not so sure now.

Yesterday, I got an email from Cineworld saying they are not opening yet and today I see that they are on Friday. I'd love to see Empire Strikes Back on the big screen but no morning showings so I won't!

I haven't looked at the news for 10 days so I don't know what is happening but there was always going to be an uptick in cases when rules are relaxed (from human error if nothing else). We have planned to (finally) get a proper engagement ring on Saturday but we will see if it is safe to do so at that time.

But in the meantime.... err, look at all those European countries where cases are rising again.... in a second wave... that is broadly still less severe than the first wave we are stuck in. Complete clowns walking past my window all day wearing masks below the chin and munching on freshly purchased items from shops around here. I will shortly be braving Sainsburys and hope for the best. Still having to take Naomi in and out of hospital so could really do without getting it.

£30 extra? To watch one film? They can do one.

Post by The Doctor on Aug 5, 2020 11:13:05 GMT
Indeed. Three times the cost of seeing it in a cinema (if it was open and safe, obviously). I can understand why there is an additional charge for it but as $30 will probably equal £30 they can sod off. Heck, if a Vue was open (and I wanted to go) I could see it for under a tenner.
I do wonder if this will do damage to the Disney Plus brand if subscribers now feel that rather than the 'all you can eat for one fee' Netflix-style experience they may now have to pay hefty extra charges for 'premium' content. But then, Amazon Prime's model of 'some stuff you get to see as part of your sub and some stuff you pay extra for' doesn't seem to be hurting it so who knows!
Bit of a shame, all round, really.

I'd would be shocked though not entirely surprised if the price in the UK was £30 or even the exchange rate equvilant of $30.
US cinema ticket prices are WAAAAAAY more than UK ones. From memory I dont think Ive paid less than $13 (£10+) for an adult ticket. In the UK Vue now charge £5. In response Cineworld slightly lowered their prices and some Odeons did the same.
You might be able to convince some American subscribers with a lot of kids that $30 is cheap compared to a cinema visit.
But when the same trip in the UK would cost under £20 and the (almost certainly) superior animated version of Mulan is free on Disney+ I just cant see them being stupid or greedy enough to try charging £30 and if they do I cant see it working.

Cripes, you'd have to be a special kind of fan to pay that to see a film on the small screen when you could presumably just wait a few months and buy it to own on DVD.
Mind you, if this was 2019 and it was Avengers: Endgame rather than Mulan, I expect most of us would pay for it.

Mulan is one of the live action Disney 'remakes' (I know it is not a strict remake for Mulan) I actually want to see and can see a point to. But no way I'm paying extra for it if it is that much. Might well consider it if it was a tenner or something, but $30 is very steep.

Yup. I do want to see it but if it is bypassing cinemas (understandable if sad) I'd rather wait for the Blu-Ray which will be somewhat cheaper.
Other films have bypassed cinema and went on Disney Plus (Hamilton, Artemis Fowl) with no extra cost. Imagine the extra sign-ups they would get if Mulan just went on it normally. Otherwise, if someone doesn't have Disney Plus and wants to see Mulan they are potentially shelling out £6+£30 just to watch it once.
