ACTUALLY maybe I could travel back to 1986... Release my pandemic then! Global Lockdown! NO ONE SEES THE MOVIE!!! Without the assistance of mind-blinding nostalgia, the subsequent staggered release of TF:The Movie will gain it no interest and it will disappear into the obscure ether where it belongs!
AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!

I'm fairly certain the Movie did not do well at cinemas anyway. It was repeat VHS viewings that made it the cultural behemoth it is today.
You would have to uninvent the home video recorder Shockprowl, a task I believe beyond even your powers!

Watching the movie at home is why Sunbow is widely remembered as being better than it is. Because the movie is better than the show, even if it's fairly nonsensical, and until Rhino released the show on DVD for the first time, the movie on old vhs tapes is the only form of the cartoon most people had access to since it went off the air in what, '86? '87? What year did Powermaster Prime happen?

THE MOVIE IS NOT BETTER THAN THE SHOW!!!! It is. Only as an 85-minute animated music video, but not as a coherent, original story. Martin

"Ohhh look, children, come here and see fancy new futuristic toys! We'll cruelly do away with the established stars who have served us so well, but don't you worry about that, children, just come here and look at the lovely lovely prescious!"I pity you, Doctor....

The ONLY good things to come out of Transformers The 'Movie' is the concept of Unicron and the fucking awesome Dad Rock! The best thing to come out of TF:TM is its far superior Marvel UK promotional spin-off story, 'Target: 2006', which outshone the thing it was supposed to be promoting. And then in 1991 Furman wrote a proper Unicron saga. Martin

Yes, but more people would have owned the movie than cassettes of not even a dozen episodes. What was most common here for parents to do was renting the VHS, then copying it. Video rental stores were unlikely to have the tapes of the episodes. And most kids weren't little autistic six year olds who hyperfocused and watched the tapes ad nausium, like me. So I stand by my statement that the only thing most people had access to after the show went off air, was VHS copies of the movie.

Though in the 1980's VHS players still weren't a common thing. We didn't have one and nor did most local people in town. The only time we saw a VHS player was when The One The School Had was pulled out for rare special occassions. When we got a VHS player in 1992 it was a big deal! I saw The Movie in the cinema but never saw the show until a few episodes in tiny Realplayer vision online in the late 90's. Didn't see the whole series until the DVD's in the early 2000's. -Ralph

I think you need to rewatch this if you truly think that. About five years ago, after the kids started to like watching the cartoon, I bought and watched the movie without them, realising they would not enjoy the deaths of the established characters. But I wasn't sure, it'd been a while since I'd seen it, so I had to check it. So I watched the movie, all the way through, for the first time in years. And I can honestly say, as a Man, as a Transformers Fan, of sound mind, that the movie is inferior to the cartoon. The animation is not particularly better- it is still full of errors. But it's the plot, and the replacement of the characters THAT MADE 'The Transformers' the success it was, that -to me- makes it hollow and deeply unsatisfactory and insubstantial.
