When Armada was done the first time it introduced the Minicon peg to Transformers: a 5mm peg with a shaft down the middle that you could attach a Minicon to.
NOW (probably since Arms Micron in Japan) the preferred method of attaching extras to toys is a 5mm hole, recessed into the toy. Siege onwards has made this much more prominent and it looks like this is the direction new Armada toys are going in Evolution.
But which is the better method? A post sticking out the main toy or a hole recessed into it?

A hole is definitely better on the main toy as it's less clutter. But then it results in a much more garish peg on the smaller toy, if it's a figure.

I would think the vast majority of items you'd want to attach would be a weapon, or something that turns into a weapon (Targetmaster, Battlemaster) They'll have 5mm posts *ANYWAY* so they can be hand held.
For the others, Siege/Earthrise Micromasters demonstrated that it's not hard to do a fold out 5mm peg on a smaller toy

I suppose I'd rather be in hole, as opposed to being on top of a post, which I assume is what the question of this thread is asking. I'd just be worried about falling off the post all the time. At least if one were in a hole there would be some shelter from the elements. I'd hope there would be a way out of the hole though, a ladder or some such. Obviously I wouldn't want to be trapped in the hole. Phil didn't identify a time-scale for his experiment.
(Reading people's replies above, I think some have become mistaken over what this thread is about.)

Illegal poll. Where's the Velcro option??? Martin Never been used as a means of attaching things to Transformers. I don't believe Magnets have either. It's post vs hole as that seems to be how Armada was handled originally vs how it looks like it'll be handled now. See from this post onwards, currently in the leaks thread, for more and why the subject's come up.

But it isn't being handled now. The Legacy Armada toys don't come with minicons.

I can see the Minicons coming, 2 per core pack or singularly.

I do like a good hole, but the other's not bad from time to time.
(I'm disappointed in you all, really.)
In terms of attaching figures to toys, I do think that the hole is better, though - the other way around means you need to have lots of unsightly bumps all over the main figure, whereas you need just the one post on the Minicon/Battlemaster/whatever, which is easier to incorporate. I'm guessing they used posts on the original Armada figures because of the need to activate action features, and although you could've done it by sticking something in a 5mm port I guess it would've run the risk of whatever was pushed to activate the play feature forcing the Minicon out of the hole.

We need more magnet activated features in Transformers! Any would be good. But that would count as a play feature, so it's not going to happen.

Have you ever played with any of the 2000 Microman line which does use Magnets as a means of attaching and indeed activating play features?

I used to have a Space Lego set that used magnets. I have only the dimmest memories of those sets existing. They must have come out during a period in my life (foolish adolescence) when I wasn't paying attention to Lego...

With the proliferation of basically pocket computers, and computers everywhere, I can see magnets being a key play feature in TFs as being something that ends in tragedy.
I mean without even thinking, I set my TFs on top of my phone all the time.

Hmmm. I'm going to be controversial and say neither. They should shift to 3mm post/hole connection - that would open up so many more options to accessories Transformers - most HG or non-scale Gundam or 30 Minute Missions stuff and the majority of Kotobukiya's accessories (Frame Arms, Gigantic Arms, I think a lot of the Hexagear stuff). It would broaden the options for customisation rather wonderfully. Sure it is is possible to make adaptors with 5mm hollow plastic tubing but it is a pain in the rear to do. How much simpler if one could just slot a 30 Minute Missions railgun straight into a forearm socket on a TF.
I may be going out an a heretical limb here. But this issue has arisen a lot in the planning stages of my in process "Project Sigurd" T30 Jetfire upgrade so it has been on my mind for some time.

Whilst I would love to see that, in today's economic climate I'd fear that the smallest fighter would be in the forty quid price range. Or they wouldn't include magnets. Or something. I don't trust toy companies any more.

The last few years we've had a number of Transformers with the ability to attach things to their wrists.
Some toys do this by having a hole in their wrist. Impactor springs to mind
Some have posts: Armada Megatron
Can anyone think of any others?
On a similar note there's a few drill bits floating about: Zetar & Toxitron Jazz have holes in the back, Miner Megatron has a peg,
Can anyone think of any other drillbits and if they have a peg or hole?

Does the drillbit remove from the mount that's hand held and fits into the turret?
Though that reminds me that UW Nosecone has one that is removable
