About Time - the latest volume is something a of disappointment. As in depth as previous entries, but lacks some of the humour and verve of earlier volumes, and some of the essays could do with being shorter and pithy.

Picked up the Bob Holmes book. I hope it has more than the usual 3 photos we have of him!

I've ended up buying myself About Time Volume 7 - reading matter is quite valuable to me at the moment so I thought I would top up the stash. I have to agree that it is not up to the standard of previous volumes. Whilst there was always a certain amount of snark in previous volumes it came across as relatively good-natured ribbing. This feels, less so. There is also less of a sense of balance than in previous volumes. There is a strong sense that the books intends, rather than telling you what it thinks of particular writers and episodes, to explain to you what you should think. There was one episode in particular where I feel like I am being hectored about how I should view the overall corpus of the writers work.
It just isn't as friendly and chatty as previous volumes, and as a result is less entertaining to read. (Full disclosure, I don't go to the About Time series for hard data perse, more for an interesting view entertainingly expressed. I feel so far that I am getting less of that out of this volume).

You will all thank me.
Not sure if all copies have one, but initial orders came with a cd-rom that featured trailers and music tracks for the plays as well as additional artwork that there wasn't room for in the book. Happy to share if need be.

Reading through the book about Robert Holmes and noticing with despair the many footnotes mentioning how many episodes of various series (or whole series) that no longer exist in archives and which have not even got soundtracks in existence. Certainly makes me appreciate a bit more how much of DW we still actually have to watch/listen to!

I had avoided that as the publisher kept hawking it but didn't explain what it actually was.

Loved that. My copy has arrived, to take it's place in the "to read" pile. It is chunkier than I expected - I look forward to diving into this soon. Karl

No worries you can square up with me later, nae rush.
Blue Box Boy, a sluggish start I thought but once it got going quite enjoyable, I was pleasantly surprised.

I also got my Mirror The Doctors - The Archive in the post today. Lots of fab photos, many of them previously unpublished. £5 in store now.
The Jean Marsh from Feast of Steven, Web of Fear location and Pertwee Dalek photos particularly caught my attention

Mirror The Doctors? Strange title!
Listening to The Crusade. Fab story.
Also listened to The Reign of Terror. One of those odd (mostly) existing stories that I actually prefer as a soundtrack. Not sure why.

The Jean Marsh from Feast of Steven, Web of Fear location and Pertwee Dalek photos particularly caught my attention Cheers for that Phil - it's a colleague of mine who put it all together, writing it and choosing the pictures. It's been a real labour of love for him. The ones in there are only a small selection of what's in the archive, too! And Ralph, it's Trinity Mirror's archives, not just the Mirror. TM's the parent company that own many newspapers, not just the Mirror. I might as well plug that there's a supplement in the Daily Record today too, looking at Scottish connections to the programme. Here's hoping tonight is good fun. I really lost interest last season and remain unconvinced by Clara, but am optimistic tonight will be a suitable tribute to the programme as a whole.

I am about halfway through "Justyce Served" (insomnia may be a pain in the proverbial but it does wonders for my reading) and thoroughly enjoying it. A wonderful summary of the Audio Visuals plays which I have not had the pleasure of hearing, and a wonderful insight into the minds of Doctor Who fandom of the era. It is intriguing reading through it and realising that almost every person on the "Production" side (as opposed to the acting side, although there is a lot of overlap) would later do at least some work for Big Finish, with most of them being quite heavily involved.... Really good book, great purchase and with the nice advantage that all the profits go to a couple of good charities.

New DWM is ..... not the best. It has a very good review of the latest volume of "About Time". Cavan Scott is lethal with the verbal stilletto (ironic as the book reads more like an oversized club). Karl
