Not so much a mystery, more an annoyance that one of the Strike Planes isn't right!

What is often overlooked is that having key characters at a lower price point helps to reach other demographics. Not everyone has £55 for an Optimus Prime toy. Having a cheaper Optimus Prime etc can suit lower budgets for kids/parents. Having a lower point of entry is a sensible thing for any toy brand to have. The price point was too high and distribution was too poor for Core but the idea was solid. Oh yeah, it was definitely a good idea. One of the best things that the Prime toyline did was to give us the Cyberverse range, so that you could get the complete roster of characters at an affordable price - and with playsets! I definitely took advantage of that, since I didn't have the money to get the full cast of characters at full price at the time. So it's definitely a good idea. They just forgot the "affordable" part. As well as the "actually on shelves" part...

So did I.
But not at the expense of Skywarp's Null Rays

Wasn't bothered about that at all. I don't assume new toys have all the features old toys. So nothing is 'missing'.
I was bothered by Thundercracker being made of Unobtainium but hey ho!

Wasn't bothered about that at all. I don't assume new toys have all the features old toys. So nothing is 'missing'. You moan like anything whenever a new toy is missing it's action feature! In Skywarp's case the null rays had already appeared with Starscream, and do so later with Thundercracker, so they were removed to make way for the sword part!

So did I. But not at the expense of Skywarp's Null Rays Eh, you could just assume that the variable caliber machine guns are built into the body this time, instead of in external pods like his earlier body. (Perhaps up near the shoulders/air-intakes near where the firing port for a real F-15's single gun is?) Karl

New toys aren't missing action features. They just lack features previous toys had. While annoying, they can't be said to be actually 'missing' anything. They are complete in respect of their own designs.

There have some really clever, innovative toys at Core class - and also affordable. So it's a shame to see them go, but I'm sure something comparable will be along before too long. With the right strategy, they could easily be the core (no pun intended) range: think Cyberverse, Micromasters or Action masters.
Speaking as a retailer, Core should be the pocket money and/or impulse purchase price point. But in practice, I think children and adults are just as inclined to buy Deluxe as Core. I actually sell more Deluxe, but that's possibly down to the overall number of releases and the characters.

I'm only really seeing core class at around £15, which is neither impulse buy nor pocket money price range to me. They are too expensive for what you get, I think.

Where's got them for £15, that's far too high.
Even the £11 Pulse asks is a bit too high

I miss the 80's. If you couldn't afford the regular size Transformers like Hoist, Starscream, Jazz, etc. . all around the £12.99 to £15.99 range, you had the mini-bots for something like £2.99 to £3.99, or you went all-out on the affordable pocket money Go-Bots for £1.99 each!
I remember my first ever 'Big Money Spend' as a kid. £39.99 on a Starcom Starmax Bomber from Woolworths. It felt like I'd spent millions!!

Here's the fool proof plan that would have saved the core class and made it the most successful pricepoint in TF history:
Gobots! Both the 'Challenge of,' and the G2/Spychanger varieties! Just rededicate the pricepoint entirely to Gobots.
Problem solved, a guaranteed smash hit!

Just rededicate the pricepoint entirely to Gobots. Problem solved, a guaranteed smash hit! That will also solve the next two "Who will be Titans?" problems, as it's obvious: The Command Center and Thruster. The next two commanders will obviously be Puzzler and Monstrous, with at least two Leaders dedicated to Zod and Scales. So this solution helps out all the floundering large size classes!

I am amazed Core lasted this long. Distribution has been shiiiite.

One of them will probably be Nemesis Prime. I suspect the other might be Soundblaster. And one last Dinobot?
Utter shambles at UK retail, especially the Nemesis Prime/Thundercracker wave. Smyths don't stock them and no Hasbro presence at the Supermarket
Online was variable. Fine to preorder.

Smyths don't stock them and no Hasbro presence at the Supermarket Online was variable. Fine to preorder. And being online is fine, but they're meant to be the cheaper price range of figures - once you have to buy one of these things at eleven quid and then add on postage you're closer to buying a deluxe. As you say, an utter shambles.
