I'm all settled for the long night. Just had some carrot cake and the first pepsi has been deployed.

I have tortilla chips and dip primed and ready for when the first results start coming in.
Meanwhile, on the Beeb, Jeremy Vine has a very exciting touch-screen map!

I've been reading blogs from American friends that people have waited up to 6 hours to cast thier vote. I hope whoever wins, it will work out for the best and happiest result.

Yay! I have Cherry Coke. Love having a 24 hour petrol station around the corner. Once the subway opens it will be like a fantasy land.
I can enjoy the night now.

A boys choir in Phoenix is now singing to cheer up the Republicans. The crowd seem unwilling to develop joy.

FOX have called Ohio, but ABC haven't as yet. If Obama carries Ohio it could be all over. Florida is still touch and go.

The US Republican Ambassador in the BBC studio is increasingly losing the plot. He's going to bust a blood vessel in a minute.

God it just shows how timid most US journalists are towards their government officials if he thinks that interview warranted a sacking.

Sadly I couldn't sit up and watch this live, but to wake up this morning and discover that Obama won now that was really something. We have just experienced a genuinely amazing historic moment. For the first time in its existence the people of the US have elected a non-"old white bloke" to the highest office of the land, I wasn't entirely sure that as a nation they were ready to do that yet - I had thought that it might take another term or two before they were ready for something that radical. Whatever happens next America has already demonstrated great change.
We've just seen a culture execute quite a major shift in front of our eyes, which is an amazing thing to see.

My idea of a vigil was sleeping from 10.30 till 2, then watching the telly in bed from 2 till 3.30 by which time I was confident enough of the result to go back to sleep again.
The Reublican Ambassador really wasn't a fan of the BBC, was he. I liked Simon Schama calling Dimbleby a "wuss" for not being prepared to call the overall result until Obama had 270 votes.

How often are the presidential elections?
|
|
|
Post by Grand Moff Muffin on Nov 5, 2008 9:04:21 GMT
Normally every four years. And you can't be President for more than eight years. (So George W Bush couldn't stand this year because he's already won two elections and had his eight years.)
If Obama does well he'll win again in four years time, and have to step down in eight years time.

I was becoming rapidly more annoyed with the former ambassador simply because he was showing the most blinkered and incredible narrow minded viewpoint. Still it was funny watching him squirm
Thank goodness America voted in the right man.

I think we woke up to a different world this morning. An America that can elect a black President is a changed America. I hope that the whole world will be the better for it. Regardless of how good a President Obama turns out to be (we can't see the future, any leader can only be judged with hindsight), this is an historic moment.

Was it Churchill that said; "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing — after they've tried everything else."
