Good news for America, and the world.
It was quite exciting to watch, but near 4am I was flagging and just willing Obama to hurry up and win! I was amused by the portents of doom from Ted Koppel (IIRC) just seconds after the victory until Dimbelby told him to shush. Simon Shama was a hoot.
Other than the nutty Ambassador, the Republicans in the BBC studio took the defeat with good grace and humility. I did like the Republican who didn't seem that bothered: "in politics there is no such thng as a final victory or a final defeat." It was the most incisive comment all night.

I made it through to 6am when it was all over. Now I'm tired.
Bolton is a complete dick. Why Bush thought he was the guy to make nice at the UN is for me one of the more baffling choices.
Gore Vidal was just bonkers I think he just likes to argue with people.
It was frustrating after months of McCain being well also a bit of a dick that in his concession speech he finally came across as the guy that made me quite confident, in the summer, that the next four years would be better than the last whoever won.

I tuned in just after the first results came in, not expecting to watch much, but then as in edged closer to the 270 I kept telling myself 'oh well maybe a bit longer'. Tiredness eventually got the better of me. I'm not sure when I opted for sleep but Obama had won and was on 290ish (and had been for a while). Missed the speeches but watched on the beeb site this morning.

Bolton wasn't sent to the UN to make nice though. He was sent their to make sure the UN got back into line after a Secretary General who seemed to be intent on following policies that didn't always match up with US interests. In essence, Bolton was there to try to make sure that the UN was working in the "correct" way as far as the US Administration was concerned. McCain does strike me as gracious in defeat - which may come from him being an old school political operator, he knows the forms and the rituals very well. (Mind you, for all his rhetoric on the campaign trail McCain does have a reputation for being willing to reach across party boundaries when trying to put together a consensus. Karl

McCain was the best candidate the Republicans could field. He still has much to offer his country. Palin, hopefully, will never come within spitting distance of the international stage again.

I recommend watching The Daily Show election special tonight on More 4 at quarter to nine. It's pretty hilarious.

Was it Churchill that said; "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing — after they've tried everything else." Britain can't talk. Martin

I was surprised to find out that Obama is 47. He looks younger than that. Still a lot more milage on the clock than 72 year old McCain who is also pretty active despite his age.

I caught a bit of the election at quarter to five this morning as I got up for work and wasn't surprised that Obama won - he was the best man in my opinion.

The Times have done a family tree for Obama and they've really gone to town going back to 1692 on his mother's side, what a lot of effort but what was the point? Is it only me that thinks the media is in love with Obama? I weren't around in the 1960's but I get the feeling this love-in vibe for Obama was around when JFK came to power, that is the impression I get from remembering a certain Simpsons episode were JFK and Nixon confess their love for Duff beer.

It may be an internet meme, but Obama allegedly likes Conan comics.

Conan comics eh? I had heard that but hadn't heard it from a terribly reliable source.
I've also heard tell that he's a fan of "The Wire". Not sure what to make of that either. Certainly the two make for an unlikely pairing, but I'm learning not to be surprised by him. (He still gets a certain amount of admiration from me for his comment years back when Clinton was being hectored about the dope incident in college - "I smoked some dope in college and I inhaled. Isn't that supposed to be the point." )

Just out of curiosity has anyone ever read IDW's Presidential Material comics of Obama and McCain? I read both of them today and can't believe what is contained within.
The Obama comic is extremely slow-paced and seems to highlight the worst of America's new President while the McCain comic is humourous to say the least. The first few pages read like an Arnie movie with McCain being portrayed as some kind of immortal superhero who can crash planes and escape largely unscathed. It then changes tack by reading like an episode of L.A Law before changing once again into something reminicent of the West Wing.

I suspect I'll have the BBC news streaming the rest of the day!

him and michelle are very nice, and I hope they do well.
But I get the feeling that the press, especially on this side are waiting for him to mess up
