Yaaaaaay I have finally seen it all. Does the end mean that Bob Dylan or Jimi Hendrix is god?

After thinking about the ending for the last week I've come to appreciate it even more. So many good moments. Plus I'm pleased that it finally ended. Like properly ended, not like the various Star Trek or other sci-fi series where things just kind of stop but you feel like they could go on if there was budget for another series (or film!). Its quite satisfying to sit back and view the story as a complete whole.

I don't know what it's about, though I have seen some of the original series. Given all the positive reaction from folks, especially this post of John's, I think I might have quite a treat in store if I ever take a look at it. Maybe when the complete series is reduced on DVD. Martin Currently from play.com or HMV you can get a boxset with the miniseries, Razor movie and seasons 1-4 for 35 quid, which is INSANE value. It is only missing the last 10 eps but they haven't been released on dvd yet. 49 hours for 35 quid is hard to pass up though.

It's definitely worth the effort Martin, but I think you'd be right waiting until the final series is out on DVD. I'd say it's up there with Babylon 5 in terms of greatness except without a turd of a last series and many spin off TV movies. Of course other than the sci-fi element BSG is complete different to B5 so please don't have any expectations based on that!

Yup I'm waiting for the complete series on DVD or Bluray theres always some kind of additional extras to tempt people who already got the season boxsets and it works out cheaper.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the original miniseries again. I dont think I've seen it for 5 years.

So, I'm re-watching Babylon 5 at the moment and loving it, but quite keen to get my hands on a well-structured and planned sci-fi series that I haven't seen before.
A year ago a bunch of you recommended BG to me, but we were still awaiting the complete series to come out on DVD.
Apparently it now has.
Maybe I should buy it and give it a go.

I'd recommend it. It loses itself a bit midway way through but pulls itself together again very well indeed. Good action series with a lot of food for thought throughout.

Farscape is another I'm watching in full. To say it was planned, would be speaking bull.
I also always recommend Firefly and Serenity If you want something fun yet gritty.

I weakened.
I bought the Battlestar Galactica box set.
Purely based on the good reports.
And I've never seen a single episode. (Not since that awful sequel to the original series set on Earth, anyway.)
So!
Will I like it?
I'll find out later this evening!
Martin
PS Meanwhile, I'm two seasons and two episodes into my re-watching of Babylon 5.

Does it have everything? There was a TV movie called The Plan that came out after the show finished, IIRC.

They'll probably release a slightly better 'complete' boxset in a few months. And then after that...
EDIT: Also, you will bloody love it, Martin

Seen the 3-hour pilot (originally a mini-series?) and first two episodes of season one, and things are looking good so far (though I know from long experience that the quality of the pilot needn't correspond to the quality of the subsequent series, either way).
I'm glad I hardly watched any of the original series of BG or I'd be a lot more annoyed at the re-use of old names for new characters (did I ever mention that I hate re-boots?), and I'm sure this could have been done as a completely new franchise - or possibly a sequel set long after the original. But putting that to one side, it's a damn good story, with some very watchable characters - especially Baltar and the Cylons. Those who know my tastes will also be able to predict the one character I think is completely obnoxious and can't stand (the obligatory loudmouth anti-establishment bad-attitude type). I hope she has the cockiness knocked out of her and learns some humility during the course of the series.
It's a pretty bleak universe - from the humans' point of view anyway (I'm looking forward to more of the Cylons in due course) - and unlike most other space opera universes I've followed on screen, one I'm glad I don't live in. Lacks (so far) the colour and richness of culture of Babylon 5, and makes zero effort with the musical score - BUT ten out of ten (so far) for story, and quite a high score out of ten for characters and acting.
I think (provisionally) I spent my money well.

You haven't got to the good stuff yet. At this point in the game three of the best characters in the show are yet to appear

From the look of the link on Amazon you should have everything except the recently released The Plan.

You can safely skip that. It adds little.
Four characters. I forgot Doc Cottle, who Martin's probably met by now wasn't in the pilot in addition to:
Mrs Col Tight, Dean Stockwell and future acting-president Romo Lampkin
But for me the stand outs (other than that) are Col Tigh, Baltar, Helo, RayII, Tyrol and Cally. I like Cally from the position of an "ordinary person caught up in this madness".
Took me a while to like Col Tigh.....
Ha ! Only just realised that Ray II is Number 2. That's funny.

That's also apparently not included. Is it any good? What I'm loving about the series so far (and I'm nearly through season one now) is the unexpected twists, often near the ends of episodes - e.g. the President, rather than Starbuck, killing the Cylon prisoner, and the decoy ships carrying the second strike force of fighters when attacking the Cylon fuel base. Plot twists RULE. On the downside, obnoxious woman #2 (the executive officer's wife) has now joined the cast. I like the Sharons though. Martin

Caprica is a separate story, so far. You don't need it to understand or enjoy BSG.
The Plan is good for filling in the back story of some of the espionage activity that took place in the fleet from the Cylon POV, though it should only be watched after everything else and, in my opinion, is unnecessary. The Cylons work better when they are portrayed as a destructive force that track the capricans across the galaxy. It makes them less terrifying when you see events from their perspective.

Watching the plan before the first episode of the last half season is a bad idea. VERY BAD. It'll tell you who the last Cylon is for a start.

As there are only 10 episodes of Caprica so far, you might as well delay watching it as long as possible. I'm quite enjoying it, but it is a very different show. So far it's so loosely tied to BSG it wouldn't matter if you watched it before or after.
I am curious to know if, when Caprica is finished (if it is) whether it will be designed to be seen before or after BSG. I find it hard to imagine it won't spoil at least some of BSGs surprises, but as a prequel it would make more sense.

I'll leave Caprica alone for a good long while.
The trouble with watching Battlestar Galactica on DVD is that it's hard finding points where you can stop and go to bed. Just got to the end of the Pegasus three-parter, which was one such point. Much less frustrating watching it like this than having to wait a week between episodes! This way it's more like reading a novel.
So far I'm tremendously impressed by the series' consistency in its high quality. Trying to think of another series that showed the same consistency - possibly The West Wing, I guess. That's not to say I think it is the best series I've watched through, just the most consistently good.
