Those two UNIT soldiers who got captured today were built up as decent enough characters, but lose points for being so thick as to not stay in constant, confirmed radio contact with control at all times. Duh.
Bernard Cribbins cannot die!

Two Marthas.........such possibilities!
The Sontaran battlecry at the end was hilariously camp. Loved it to bits!

If General Staal does not get a spin-off show, I will cry. I so want him to win! The chap playing the role was going above and beyond the call of duty. Immense!

I liked the way he was called Staal the Undefeated until the Doctor hit him with a tennis ball, and after that he was call Staal the Bloodbringer or something like that.

When I saw that dance I just had a vision of a horde of Klingon warriors wiping them out for pretending to be Real Warriors (TM).

Bah. The Sontarans were waging war before the Klingons even evolved.
And are still doing so by the year 12,000 AD. Against the same enemy. In retrospect, this doesn't say much about either of them being good at war.

Those two UNIT soldiers who got captured today were built up as decent enough characters, but lose points for being so thick as to not stay in constant, confirmed radio contact with control at all times. Duh. Martin I actually thought that they did fairly well for UnIT personnel - certainly they showed more nous than back in the UNIT days. It wouldn't actually be protocol for military personnel to be in constant communication in a situation like that. By all accounts they were anticipating a "cold recovery" situation, and in any event having all the teams sweeping the building transmitting continually is a recipe for overloading your communications infrastructure and general confusion. They quite sensibly called in the situation as soon as they ran into something that was outside the norm. Where they fell down was in not noticing that no-one acknowledged them when they did call in (at that moment they morphed from UnIT personnel into UNIT regulars of old). Speaking of UnIT - I see that the sinister black uniforms are now standard for their grunts. That and some of the dialogue seem to indicate that we are supposed to see them as being a "bad"thing. Considering the number of unfriendly species in the Doctor Who universe who seem to go around trying to conquer planets/eat their inhabitants I'm less immediately opposed than I think the show wants me to be to the idea of having some level of military preparedness. After all, Earth doesn't have enough sonic Plot-go-faster devices to give every citizen one........ That aside, a really good episodes. General Stahl was wonderful - I thought the actor playing him put in a really good shift. Reminiscent of the Sontaran's of old, but with a class of bluster and arrogance all his own. (I am glad that the Sontaran's Magic Gun Jamming Device doesn't work the way Stahl thinks it does though. If it did work the way Stahl explained it then those guns should have misfired quite messily in the hands of the poor soldier boys. But then, Stahl is a General, not a battlefield technician - he quite rightly knows all he needs to know about the device, you turn it on and it stops the primitive chemical weapons working. Anything else is for the techie types) The Sontaran Haka had me in absolute stitches. A camp highlight. I look forward to seeing the american genius/cult leader get his comeuppance (as collaborators have a tendency to do in "Doctor Who"), I figure that either a last minute heroic sacrifice after learning the error of his ways, or a stabbing in the front (Sontaran's don't do backs) from his erstwhile allies is on the cards. Perhaps it was just me, but from the moment I knew that Sontarans were in this story I was waiting for the moment when they got around to cloning Martha - the "evil double" shot in the season trailer, coupled with known clone race being due to appear made it fairly inevitable I felt. When I saw that dance I just had a vision of a horde of Klingon warriors wiping them out for pretending to be Real Warriors (TM). Klingons? I think you over-rate their chances. Whilst the Klingon's were congratulating themselves on bringing their over-complicated knives to a gunfight the Sontarans would just shoot them. Sontaran honour is more flexible than the bone-headed Klingon variety. Karl

Yeah, the idea of UNIT being a bit sinister is stupid - as with the "OMG YOU BLEW UP THE SYCORAX?!" bit, it sometimes comes off like humanity shouldn't be able to defend itself without the Doctor's help. Plus, really - how is the new UNIT any different to the old UNIT? Large numbers of troops, swooping down and using legal powers to take places over, lockdowns on workers, high tech mobile command centres, wielding guns: this is all stuff they've done before, the only difference being the budget of the show (so we can see the big troop numbers more of them instead of being told they're around).

In all fairness I don't think Bernard Cribbins surviving is much of a spoiler. The nation would crucify RTD if he killed Bernard on screen.

In all fairness I don't think Bernard Cribbins surviving is much of a spoiler. Me neither. He's a member of the Companion's Family - and therefore has script immunity, as he is a vital part of RTD's construction of the show. They can only die if either they are already dead or there is a backup to hand. Too true - after all,. we are talking about the nice policeman who helped Doctor Who defeat the daleks when they invaded Earth in 2150AD (In Technicolour!). Karl
