Fab 'making of' doc about the original production and the offcut footage from episode 6 looks absolutely STUNNING in HD. I know that footage wasn't actually in the transmitted episode but my goodness: 60's DW has never looked so good in those brief snippets.

"Guides of Argolis. According to our ancient laws, we, Pangol, declare ourselves your new leader. We are the future, guides of Argolis, for what is about to happen and for the eons that lie beyond, you will grant us your unquestioning obedience!" This week on Forty Years Of Tom Baker's Doctor we're watching episode 535 The Leisure Hive: Part Four 40yearstombakerdw.blogspot.com/2020/09/535-leisure-hive-part-four.html

Finally created enough time to get caught up a bit with the anniversary episodes. On Leisure Hive still though. I know in terms of the stories there's been a lot of discussion generally about whether the image quality is worth the upgrade from DVD. No idea why though, the difference is night and day to me. Obviously upscaling a 40-year-old two-inch video tape isn't going to be the same as a modern HD recording, but there is much more definition in the picture than the DVDs. Those pre-paintbox effects shots like the digital zoom when the TARDIS materialises in episode one are really exposed in a way they never have been before.

These behind the sofa things are hysterical. I've got an aunt just like Janet Fielding.

A teaser of the Daleks animated show was put out today. Let's be charitable and remember it's a freebie for youtube.

Backup to date. Just watching Meglos 3 now. Interesting how this story feels very Hartnell in format, and stylistically is much more season 15/16 than something like Leisure Hive. Grugger and Brotadac are very Robert Holmes style characters. Even though the writers are new to the series, they're very clearly influenced by its traditional formats, which we also get with State of Decay. There's quite a lot of old in the new.
No link in your post, Phil.

I watched it once through when the VHS came out. I've tried again but I've never even made it to the end of episode 1.
Scene-synch is interesting though.

That is pure magic and it still looks like magic today. Being of that generation of TV watchers, we are all tuned to what CSO is, when it starts moving my brain flips out. What helps it with thus is the low camera angles on the models and the depth of field going on with ships taking off from behind things. Aside from the truly excellent effects shot on film, stuff like the Zygon ship blowing up or the trial ship, I think Meglos has some of the best model effects in Doctor Who. Not because of what they look like, but because of how far they push the technology.
I reckon Tom's enjoying himself more in this than others in this season. Meglos feels like a story missing from season 15. It isn't great, but it's watchable and harmless enough to me.

Yup.
I would also like s18 and s19 to be available so I can actually buy them.
Meanwhile the much older DVD's remain in print. It's maddening.

I love these behind the sofa things. Padders Vs Fielding is comedy gold. Sarah Sutton watching the scene sync shots and saying, this is so much better than we had in Time Flight...
