Just heard from co-worker that Winnie Ryder is to play Spock's mum Much gritting of teeth was had when it was relayed that BBC say she will play Spock's Vulcan mother I had to explain that this would require a huge amount of Retcon - then went to AICN and they sai will play human mother and I calmed down

Also announced Janice Rand will be played by another of JJ's alumni, Rachel Nicols. Still waiting to hear who Grunberg will play. Maybe one of the redshirts who dies early on.

Hmm, I'm not sure about this. Recasting the original crew? If you can't think up owt new...
Still, keeping an open mind.
I love the Classic series, Mrs Shockprowl and I sometimes sit down to an episode on an evening- candy for the brain. The sexism never ceases to make us chuckle. We joke about Uhura "a woman on the Bridge!" etc. But last night we watched "Turnabout Intruder" and right at the end there was something that kirk said which we just couldn't believe. After he had gotten his body back of the mad Dr Lester, he said (not an exact quote) "...such a shame, she could have lead just as fuller life as any woman." Hu?! Meaning what, that Women can't lead as fuller lives than men? Maddness. Nearly as bad as the "..She's quite intelligent, for a Woman.." line, I forget which episode that was though. Considering the fantastic inter-racial work the show did, a chinese man at the helm, a black woman on communications, the sexism seemed not to be as radically delt with. Can't blame them too much ofcourse, it's just how America/the World was. And only 40 years ago!

I don't know from our perspective it looks quite bad, but at that time having a woman as part of the bridge crew, even if usually used as a receptionist was probably a bigger deal. That she was black was apparently mind boggling for our american cousins. I dont think she was worse done by than the rest of the cast outside the main three. But yes in general sexism was rampant. I do believe though that most of us including women would find it more watchable than Roddenbury's attempt to balance the scales by putting men in miniskirts during the next gen. Andy

Oh dear God yes the men-in-mini-skirts!!! That was totally MAD!!!
And what's that you say? A woman on the Bridge? And a black one at that? No no, Andy, you must be mistaken!

Watched another Classic ep, A Taste of Armagedon, last night, or the night before last. One mad bit in it which made us laugh. The Ambassador's aid gets 'distrupted' and crumples to the ground. The Ambassador himself seems to give him a pat and looks over his should at him as they go on their merry way, but no one else appears to give a stuff! Classic 'red shirt' syndrome! Mint!

Having been reminded of it, I watched it over dinner. Still a classic slice of Trek. A fine, increasingly demented turn from the actor playing Head Bloke on the planet of doom.

Watched some classic Trek yesterday. Space Seed still rocks very hard. I love Khan's line "Please sit and entertain me." Greatest pick-up line of all time. One day I will find the opportunity to use it! One day!

Ralph, I have no idea about a) your current dating status or b) your sum total of experience with women. I respectfully suggest that should you attempt to use it, any attempt to move from single to attached a propos a) or to increase b) may backfire.
Stick to the Doctor's attitude of "hell I'm gorgeous and women will fancy me whatever I do". Seems to work for Tennant.

I freakin' love that line! Mad! Had it as my sig for a while. Tried it on Mrs Shockprowl once. Jaw still aches in cold weather.
Watched Ememy Within the other night. Top top episode. Shatner over-acts with such genious! He really is the coolest white man on the planet! We laughed all the way through- SHUTTLE CRAFT, JIM, SHUTTLE CRAFT! Mint. I think it was that ep where at one point they had a woman sitting at Navigation! The very idea! It was only for a short scene though.

DS9 is showing on Virgin these days (season 3, I think) and is bringing back good memories.

Which version of the Motion Picture is in the set ? I've got the one with the redone effects.
And is the STII the one with or without the extra footage ?

Yeah, it's Motion Pic with the re-done effects. Haven't got round to 2 yet.
I generally liked the new effects, but kinda miss the jerky action of the origional. One thing I can believe they've changed is the cool red-alert klaxon! I love the origional Ba Ba Ba Ba, now it's a more conventional klaxon. Poo.

Even from that small section of the Enterprise, I get a real sense of weight and size from it. The Enterprise feels huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge. This please Ralph.

I quite like that shot as well - it is quite well composed to convey the impression that this is a Big Spaceship. I've seen what is rumoured to be a broadside on shot of the ship over on Macrossworld and if that is genuine then on the basis of the two shots it does seem as if they have done a really nice job with the ship.
I like my spaceships, big, solid and with a definite presence, so they do seem to be going in a direction that I rather like. No real comments on the cast, as I don't actually know that many of them - and some of the ones I do know of I don't really know what they are like as actors. A lot will depend on script and director in the final analysis.

Unintentionally amusing. Note that the name of the movie isn't clearly indicated. So what you have is some bloke with a blowtorch on some scaffolding somewhere. If you don't know Star Trek, you could be forgiven for thinking it is a trailer for an extreme DIY movie. Folk will be champing at the bit for Chrimbo 2008! -Ralph

"Summer is where you see the Star Wars and the Transformers," said studio spokesman Michael Vollman. "Star Trek is in that league." We'll see. Nice to see ST having to live up to Transformers!
