Yes, I did temping for several months when I finished uni. You just have to go into a city centre temping agency and take a word processing / typing speed test (not too hard) and then wait for them to ring you with a placement. Deadly boring, but it gave me my first experience of office life, and a decent reference to help with my proper job application.
Of course, it all depends on whether there is such work going in your area. There was plenty going in Coventry in 2001.
But vacancies should keep coming up, since the people in those jobs don't stay in them for long - not because they're terrible jobs, but because they use them as platforms for jumping into better / more interesting jobs, often in the organisation they are temping at. If you apply for a permanent job in an office where you have already proved yourself as a temp, where you have learnt about the work and know your way around and so won't need as much initial training/induction, and perhaps even getting an internal reference, it can provide you with a big advantage over external candidates.
Chins up, all...

In other news, the Gobots fanclub received a sudden influx of Tory fans. However, one long-term fan was unimpressed: "They'll soon abandon us when Obama compares himself to Leader-1", he said. Speaking of Gobots. Here's the recent skit from Robot Chicken which also features Baymblebee too. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DEGJG2vPXbA

Amazon agreed to refund the cost of an order for Chrimbo present books that Royal Mail lost. Pretty good of them considering it wasn't their fault.

Well. Its almost 7am and my exam is in 2 hours. I'm not really sure I want to do it or whether I'm wasting my time with Uni in general.
But... If I don't attempt or try anything I'll regret not giving it a go.
If this simple thick-headed Bristolian is going to go under he's going to go down trying. I know that for sure
I think over the weekend I need to consider what I should be doing. I feel less and less like I belong under (and studying alongside) an academic umbrella of smart people and perhaps should be looking into shovelling fries and flipping burgers for the rest of my life.
Hate to sound pesamistic, but that's how it is right now.

Going to University is *never* a waste of time, no matter what the outcome or how it feels at the time. Just take each day/task/exam/assignment at a time. The most important thing is to reboot yourself each time. By that I mean take a deep breath, smile at someone (or get someone to smile at you) and take a day for yourself. Do something just for you, it doesn't matter what it is, but just remind yourself that you're still alive and still a real person. Hopefully then, with a clear mind and some renewed energy you can tackle the next assignment with more confidence and enthusiasm. That's my advice anyway.

The day I do that is the day I finally give up on trying to get a job helping people and everything I did to try to get a career out of it was a waste of time, money and my 20's. I'm going to keep plugging away until June. If I get to that point and I still can't get the type of work I'm suited for and have trained for then I'll give up and accept that's my lot in life. All I ever wanted to do was help people out. -Ralph

Don't give up, Ralph! The setbacks you have at the moment are only temporary and will remain to be only temporary as long as you don't give up. (And a temp job would only be temporary as well, but at least it's money coming in while you continue your search.)
And anyway, you *do* help people already. Why this week you've been helping me squeeze Swindon from the skin of the Earth like a blackhead!

Also there is nothing wrong with doing temp work whilst you look for real work. Its better than being at home not getting any money!

It's not impossible to help people and be based in an office.
I wouldn't encourage you to do temping if you thought it would reduce your chances to get the job you really want (because you had less time to do applications, for example), but it can often be a plus to show you are already working when you go for something.
Still, everyone's different.

Well I've got that 'employability' course coming up on the 26th so that's a good time to bend the ears of experts in the field.
I know I do tend to bemoan my lot in life quite frequently in the 'week' threads but I make no apologies for it (and there is a lot I'm not discussing). I have learned it is helpful to discuss feelings. I am rather isolated at present (I don't know anyone locally) and when I do meet up with Hubbers I prefer to talk nonsense as the serious stuff occupies my thoughts most of the rest of the time and it's good to have some relief. I lack spaces to vent in. It does occur to me, however, that such negative and repeititive posts could be annoying to read. So if they bother anyone, I susggest skipping over them or dropping me a PM.
In oher news, there were no ducks on the canal this afternoon. Where the hell where they? I had loads of bread for them too.

A course module leader said to me I need to do more things that make me happy and to 'take breaks'. Another thing that has happened for me today is that I've been enrolled in extra writing classes on Wednesdays so I can improve the way I write stuff. For a while I've been told I have the right idea about assignments but need to execute my wording better. The exam went bad to start and then I could not stop writing away and the 2 hour slot was'nt enough for me to finish. That does'nt mean I did badly or brilliant either. The mood I was in this morning I could have just left the paper blank or walked out. ===KEN

It does occur to me, however, that such negative and repeititive posts could be annoying to read. Just speaking for myself, I find it more than just annoying that you've been so long without a change in the direction of your fortunes and with your talents going to waste, and that I can do little more than continue to wish you well (and attempt to offer suggestions), but I don't find it annoying that you tell us about it. Rather I consider it a positive thing, and a compliment to us that you wish to share, and I'd encourage you to continue to do so. My last post just reflected the fact that I don't feel I'm helping people less when exchanging information by e-mail in the office than I do when I go out to advise colleagues and businesses in person or show members of the public wildlife in my spare time. It's the nature and purpose of the work you're doing in the office that can make it fulfilling or not, and clearly you haven't had experience of the fulfilling kind of office work. I won't pretend you can have that experience first-hand doing temp work, but you can find the people who do and get a foot in the door of an organisation that does offer interesting work - in the office or out. It's no bother Ralph really, we all need to vent sometimes and let's be honest if we can't take offering a friendly ear now and then instead of innuendo and sausage jokes we really wouldn't be much cop as people now would we. All of us are with you on this and are sure that things will turn around and sort themselves out. I know it's difficult to think it's going to happen now but it will, just keep plugging away and if you do get a bit demoralised we are all here for nonsense chit chat and a friendly shoulder to lean on when required.
