This was all organised by brother-in-law who is in IT and into Speccy stuff with his own set-up. The appropriate cables etc have been supplied.

I got a working 128k +2A Speccy for Chrimbo! The same model I had back in the day!!!! -Ralph Amazing! I found my spectrum and games when TF hunting in the loft last year. Unfortunately the tape drive on my +2 is dead. Tempted to get another one. And there's a rebooted Crash magazine? Got a link?

Blimey. Old spectrum games are very cheap, for the most part.
Oh no.

Yup, same is true for a lot of cassette/disk based games across a whole load of platforms.
Cartridges do seem to be funny money for some though.

Yup.
Grabbing loads of games off Ebay for pennies. It will be February before I can get the Spectrum set-up due to Temporary Change of Circumstances but by jove I will have a hefty library for it.
Starting on re-acquiring licensed games. Then I shall move on to more original fare and magazine cover tapes.
I have gone down the well.

There will be, in time. They are on The List. Had them all back in the day.
This is just the start of rebuilding the Spectrum library.

Fantasy World Dizzy is the greatest game ever made. It's the first game I ever remember finishing. Until then I didn't think games could be completed. Used to replay it endlessly. I think it only takes about an hour if you know what you are doing.

I managed to do Treasure Island and Magicland Dizzy after getting good at FWD. Treasure Island is quite punishing as you only get one life. I was never able to beat the original Dizzy even with a map and guide. It's totally possible to make the game unwinnable if you aren't very careful, which oddly enough feels a lot worse than just dying.

I've been watching a few let's plays of old Spectrum games on Youtube. What's amazed me is how short and small they are. I remember playing some games for months and never finishing them and now I'm watching people finish the whole game in 20 mins. Case in point: Werewolves of London. I could never finish it but you can complete it in 15 mins if you know where to go. Hilariously it has a game breaking bug that means it crashes when you get the last victim you need - clearly the devs never thought anyone would make it that far.
It all makes sense given the limitations of the hardware and how young the gaming industry was back then but it's been wild reconciling my childhood memories to cold, hard reality.

It's because old proper games are bastard hard and don't hand-hold you all the way.

On the Beeb we used to have the entire Sabrewulf map explored, but no end screen. We found an area we assumed was the end as it looked different and said that's it then.
Time to revisit this I think!
